Roland’s Journey
Don protégé
In July of 2013, when he was just 5 years old, Roland began his journey to fight a rare form of cancer called Rhabdomyocarcoma. This type of cancer attacked his eye. Happily the first part of his journey was successful and Roland won the battle.
However, cancer is a persistent adversary and it returned to Roland's life once again in September of 2015. Just as before, Roland rose to the occasion and bravely faced cancer again and was successful once more! The ever coveted 2 year mark of being cancer-free had finally arrived in November of 2018! Unfortunately the days of relief were limited to 2 months.
As our worst fears were realized, Roland was diagnosed with cancer for a third time in January of 2019. The chemotherapy regimen and radiation therapy is new to all of us. As a result, Roland and his family have set out on a whole new journey full of both fear and hope. As he has faced this opponent twice before we are confident that he will display the same bravery and determination as he has for the past 5 years.
As a result of his multiple treatments and surgeries he's undergone the wonderful doctors, surgeons and nurses are hopeful that his eye can be saved and that Roland will achieve success a 3rd time. This forces everyone involved in to uncharted territory that is somewhat terrifying but the doctors and our family are confident that this strong young man, who has lived half of his life with this terrible disease, will once again rise to the occasion and face the unknown with the same character, bravery and sheer will to come out on top once more!
We appreciate all of the love and support that has been given to Roland and our family since his first journey began. It is not only our goal, but our mission to finally overcome the challenges that have been presented to us over the years.
