Rocky Horror in Statesboro!

Our show is a pretty magical experience.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show in Statesboro, GA is a band of weirdos coming together to celebrate ourselves and each other in a way that society often doesn’t. When you walk through the doors, we want you to feel comfortable being yourself and we want you to be a part of the community that empowers other people in the same way. We are working with the Gay-Straight Alliance on campus to put the show together this year and, as always, we are looking to create a welcoming and inclusive space where everyone, regardless of size or race or ethnicity or sexual orientation or gender identity, can come together to lift each other help and celebrate the weirdness and diversity that we each bring to the table.

This will be the 11th year of the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Emma Kelly Theatre in Statesboro, GA and this show has meant more to me over the last decade than I can properly explain.

Last year, for our 10th annual show, we made some big improvements. We had our biggest cast ever and the money we raised allowed us to do probably our best show ever. We welcomed a lot of new cast members, but that show was kind of a celebration of all that Rocky had been up to that time. It was the best version of ourselves and it was amazing to celebrate that.

This year, for our 11th year, it's time to shake things up. I have played Magenta for a long time and my husband, Charlie, has been playing Frank-n-Furter even longer. We auditioned a lot of years ago and...we just never left. We still aren't leaving but we are ready to let go of those parts. It's time for the next generation to take the stage and we are so excited to be a part of their show. This will be our first year ever holding truly open auditions for all roles. There will be no automatic returners - people will have to earn each role through auditions.

This is incredibly exciting and SUPER nerve-wracking. The biggest problem we will face will not be finding a stellar cast. I have full confidence that we are going to put together an amazing ensemble. The biggest problem will be funding it. A whole new cast means a LOT of new costumes. That's where you come in!

Here’s what we need:

This kind of community is desperately needed in our small town in the deep south, but it takes money to make it happen. Our show is community theatre and we operate with a small budget from the Averitt Center that allows us to provide prop bags for the audience so that the audience can be a part of the show, even if it’s their first time attending. That means that we don’t have the money to provide costumes for every person and we rely on sharing each other’s closets and re-using things from year to year.

We don’t want someone’s finances to be the reason that they can’t do the show and we want to make sure that everyone feels great in their costume, so we are looking to raise some money to help cover these costs. We’d like to be able to help fill out each cast member’s costume so that they feel like their best selves on stage and we also want to be able to invest in making this our best and biggest show yet, to really celebrate exactly what Rocky has meant to so many of us over the years.

This year, several characters will be starting from scratch with their costumes and that can get expensive.

We have a few local fundraisers in the works as well, so we’ll post about those as well, so that you can come out and support us there as well, if you live in the area.

Here's where your money is going:

First Goal: $600 - If you donate, that money will be used first and foremost to make sure that every single person who wants to do the show has a bangin’ costume that makes them feel great and confident and celebrated. We will be making costume pieces and re-using as much as possible but even that costs money and some things will have to be purchased new this year.

Next Goal: $900 - If we raise enough money to do all of that, then the next goal is to replace the most worn-out props and fund at least a couple of new ideas for the show.

Full Goal: $1,000 - If we manage to do all of that, then our next goal is to be able to purchase tickets for our hard-working volunteers, so that those who are working tirelessly on the show but aren’t going to be on stage, won’t have to pay to attend.

Now we are dreaming: More than $1,000  - If you totally blow us away and we receive more than $1,000 in donations and fundraising, then the money that is left over will go to make sure that the cast has something to eat and drink during the very long (12+ hour long) show days and we will purchase prizes to give out during the pre-show to those brave enough to enter the virgin games.

Anything left after we have met these goals will be cover the last minute stuff that we haven't even thought of yet, (like when Frank's shoes broke during the first show last year and we had to buy new ones), or will be invested into next year's show.
