College Fund for Rocky Stone

I will be taking the Paralegal Program at Mohawk College in September 2020.

After giving back to the community for my entire life,
I have now fallen upon hard times.

From 2003 to current, my community services and giving back had reached approximately $127,883 to those in need. Highlights include The Salvation Army's Toy Mountain Campaign from 2002-2012, over those ten years, I coordinated toy drives that ultimately donated 13,409 toys to less fortunate children. From July 3rd, 2018 to August 16th, 2018, I put in 201 hours working as a non-paid Student Learning Facilitator in the CICE department at Mohawk College. From September 4th, 2018 to April 9th, 2019, I put in 404 hours working as a non-paid Social Inclusion Worker in Social Inc at Mohawk College. It has taken me 27 years to make it to this point in my life of getting a college education. At age 47, I was the first person in my family history to go to college. It has been a very long and hard journey to make it to where I am now.

At age 15, I moved out of my parent's house and worked full time. From ages 15 to 23, I worked at almost every low paying job that would hire me. Then, against all odds, hard work and long hours, at 23, I started my own company called Rocky's Kidz. I ran my company from 1994 to 2013. I decided to close my company in 2013 because even though it was a for-profit company. I ran it like a non-profit company. I become overly obsessed with giving back and I had donated almost everything I had except everyday items that were needed to survive. From 2003 to 2014, I had donated approximately $127,883 to charities and people in need. This is based solely on donation receipts and letters of recognition in which I have saved. The giving went far beyond that amount, as when I gave to individuals, I never received donation receipts or any form of recognition, other than a thank-you. I would be more than happy to show any or all donation receipts and/or letters of recognition.

I grew up in a neglected family in which the family norm was to move out at the age of 15. My older sister had moved out at age 15 and my older brother moved out at 15, so I followed the family norm and also moved out at age 15. As a child, I only had the basics, a roof over my head, clothes on my back and food in my stomach. My parents always reminded me of those basics on a daily bases. I volunteer because I grew up with very little and want to help others that are in a similar position that I was in.

Volunteering means the world to me because material items and money can come and go, but the memories of helping those in need will last a lifetime. Volunteering has taught me that one person can make a positive difference in the life of others. It has also taught me that my life does matter because if I had committed suicide in my early twenties, then I would not have had the opportunity to help all those in need over the years.

Volunteering is a life-long opportunity to give meaning to life. I will continue to volunteer and help those in need until the day I die. The future is bright when you approach it with a Strengths-based approach and look for the positives and strengths in others.

The money raised will greatly help me to pay the College tuition.

I am hoping to raise the funds needed by September 2020.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
