Rocksteady Boombox & Move 2 Texas

This campaign has two parts (see TWO below):

PART ONE: a brand new YOGOMAN release

It's been a long time coming that I took a dive into the treasure chest of my favorite musical genre: Rocksteady music (1966-68 Jamaica). In YOGOMAN's Rocksteady Boom Box, we unearth some classics, some obscurities, a Rocksteady rearrangement of a Sam Cooke song and an updated version of my own Coco Lopez.  Rocksteady became my favorite genre of music many years ago because of it's easy tempo, sweet vocals, humble rhythmic instrumentation with a big band, and how easy it is to dance to for long periods of time.

Bongo Jac and I genuinely gave this album a dance test and it passed with flying colors.. YOGOMAN performed many of these tunes on our YOGOMAN's Rocksteady Revue Tour starring Reggae Legend Winston "Flames" Jarrett, in the Fall of 2016.  Working with 77 year old Winston, who was actively part of the original Rocksteady movement in Jamaica with Alton Ellis & the Flames as a singer and co-songwriter, he helped YOGOMAN band refine the Burning Band's authentic sound, style and dynamic through rehearsing and touring with him.

Captured at North Sound Studio with local musician and engineer Sam Chue in Bellingham, WA, YOGOMAN & Bongo Jac requested to record in an older more simple style with only a few drop/room mics (instead of close microphones on everything and individual tracking control, which is typical).  The session was less than 3 hours, mainly first takes, with no overdubs.  The result is raw and unpolished heart and soul dance music straight from the dirt up to the heavens.  Of the 15 songs recorded we picked the top 7 to be released.

The costs of production are as minimal as possible though quite expensive for an independent band that barely makes a living being self booked and mangaged by a family man.

Here's the breakdown:
1. Mechanical Licensing (royalty fees for cover songs) for short run  $500
2. Recording Session                   $250
3. Mastering cost (so it's listenable on all systems) $250
4. 1000 C.D.'s -  $1500
5. 500 LP's -    $3000
6. Publicity costs (extremely modest budget)-             $2000 for basic advertising in 10 areas and mail outs to media such as suitable record labels, magazines, newspapers, online and print reviews, radio stations and distributors.
Total minimum cost = $7500.00

Ideal budget = $10,000.00

If we exceed the minimum cost, we will be able to do more international mailings and publicity where we think it will get more mileage, including international publicity. - Rocksteady music is celebrated far more in countries such as Japan, Brazil, Germany, England, and Australia for example. We would like to release the album as soon as possible to you - our friends and fans - and take it on our tour routes in the following years.
The vinyl LP album is a complicated process and can take around 3-4 months to complete. So it should be here by early Spring.

YOGOMAN's Rocksteady Boom Box will show a love and dedication to the tradition of Rocksteady music genre which began 50 years ago, while developing it's form into the future.  This recording has an impossibly more raw and vulerable feel (without effects, extensive mixing, overdubs, etc. to enhance the recording) and expanding the use of fiddle/violin and clarinet in the music,  which was barely touched on within the early years of this genre and never as integral to the sound as we have done here. This release will hopefully go into the ears of the world-wide minority who passionately appreciate the foundation era and culture of Jamaican music. This release will also give family, friends and fans a chance to appreciate our unique interpretaion of Rocksteady music.   We appreciate YOUR support because it is keeping YOGOMAN alive as a band literally.  We plan on releasing Rocksteady Boom Box online at our website - yogoman.com as soon as we can afford to pay for the mastering and royalty/licensing fees.

The beneficiaries of helping release Rocksteady Boombox is the world of music listeners at large and most importantly our dedicated YOGOMAN fans.
Funding needed by November 1st.

PART TWO: Moving to Texas

As some of you may know, in the middle of September, my small family and I are moving to deep East Texas to the small town of Linden, close to the Louisiana border. Linden, though nearly a ghost town at this point, is the Cass County seat and birthplace of such great musicians as Scott Joplin (Ragtime), T-Bone Walker (Blues), and Don Henley (Pop/Rock), and I hope to be the next best in line with my Punk/Ska/Reggae/Soul/Funk roots  as a new breed of songwriter from this area.

The Main reason we are moving here is because Bellingham, WA as lovely as it is, is becoming too expensive to live on an independent musicians income and the only time there is fluent work is during the Summer season. Where as the music season in the South is Fall-Spring when it is slow up North. So, we plan to visit our Northwest friends and family and work out of Bellingham in the Summers. Linden is close to a few rhythmic meccas such as New Orleans, Memphis and Austin (all 5 hours away) as well as even closer Cajun communities such as Lafayette, Louisiana which is about 2.5 hours from Linden. We are excited to connect with and incorporate players from our new area and combine them with our Northwest members in the Summertime for a big band if possible.

We are buying an owner financed house right downtown in Linden at an affordable rate per month (comparable to what we rented for in Bellingham, but we'll pay off the house in six years). However, the intial costs of moving and getting set up in our new home, which is unfinished with no utilities hooked up, is quite an initial expense I didn't really consider as we are used to living out of our tiny trailer on the road, so it is already a bonus from that lol.  We plan on trying to use as many salvaged and free materials as we can acquire, but hooking up Electricity is estimated at- $5000, Water $1000, Septic Tank installation/supplies/labor $9000 (the middle of national average between $4000-$14000) Gas line installation estimate is averaged at $600.

TOTAL is $15,600 for getting our home set up with basic utilities.

Moving Costs
1. Gas -
for two vehicles hauling super heavy trailers (40 & 50 foot trailers) = $4000 ($2000 each at 5mpg).
2. Vehicle Maintenance -
We had a decent summer with many shows throughout but we just recently replaced the brakes and tires in all our vehicles and trailers which ate up any extra funds we had (Les Schwab being YOGOMAN's main benefactor, they do good work and they are located from here to Colorado which is most of the way to our new home and work is guaranteed). We also bought a $300 vintage 1984 Nomad RV Trailer (32 feet long) that we hollowed out (kind of an awesome jalopy) and now holds all of our personal belongings that we will haul down to Texas (pretty sketchy, but we will be driving under the speed limit with hazard lights on). It has ended up costing us an extra $2000 at least with plywood reinforcement, brakes, tires, etc., but we will be able to use it for a guest house once we get our stuff out of it and renovate it a bit more. This thing probably weighs about 4 tons with all our stuff in it and is 50 feet long with the van attached (longer than many semi trucks, yowzah!). We hope that our cars engines and transmissions don't give out!  So at this point we have all our ducks in a row but if anything goes out, we're pretty much stuck.

TOTAL MOVING COSTS = $19,600 (minimum)
TOTAL ALBUM RELEASE COST = $7,500 (minimum)
GRAND TOTAL NEEDED = $27,100.00

We want to set up a comfortable space on our acre to for family, friends, bands and musicians to stop through and visit. As part of that element, we also want to set up a spa so my wife Jacqueline can get the care she needs to continue improving her health and decreasing her chronic pain due to a car accident many years ago that twisted her up badly.

Obviously we will benefit initially from any help provided by our friends, family and music fans in getting to and setting up our house, but so will our benefactors knowing that they helped get us set up and living safely in our new home. Secondly, we invite anyone coming through the area to stay at our fabulous new/old home or on the property when we have any outdwellings. Our 4bd 2bath house is an old Creole cottage built in 1912 with a breezeway in the middle on an acre. There is a lot of potential and we have a lot of ideas for it and the property. We are so excited!  Funds are needed as soon as possible for the move, then by the time we get down there for the utilities to get set up, which will be the second week of October.  No one in my family has ever owned a home so this is a big deal to me and I count my blessings and am SO thankful for this opportunity for us to have our own home. WOW!

Another beneficiary of our move to Texas will be the town of Linden and the general area we are moving to. Why?  Because we are active community members who will be doing peace work in integrating the somewhat segragated populace through music, creating education of the town's music history and the general areas native heritage (Caddo Indians were here first).  Oddly enough, the Sheriff is right behind us and pro-active. Renee Murphy, the town Sheriff is super down with our own music and styles we DJ (Jamaican, Soul, Funk, RnB, World).  Renee has been nothing but friendly, kind and helpful to us and has already hired us twice for local events as our live duo Yogoman & Bongo Jac. She is a shining example of a strong, motivated, kind and community minded woman in Linden, which I gather is quite untraditional in that town and area of the country.  So, we are blessed to have Renee on our side; yay!

Thank you so much for your support and prayers/well wishes - you are crucial to our longevity and growth as a family and a family band.  Our last show in Bellingham this year is this Saturday September 16th at the Wild Buffalo where we have pressed a limited amount of c.d.'s from our local manufacturer Carnelian. We hope to see you there. If you want to see details, join and share online, the event is linked HERE.

This is a huge move away from my 43 year old home of the Pacific Northwest (20 years in Seattle and 23 in Bellingham) to the South where my musical, spiritual, and now physical home exists.

Sincere thanks and praise to all of you helping make our dreams come true. - Jordan Rain/Yogoman
