Rock Steady Boxing at The Emerald

My name Sue Ludwig, and I'm a personal trainer who specializes in Parkinson's Disease specific training. I am certified in PWR (Parkinson's Wellness Recovery) Moves, Delay The Disease, and Rock Steady Boxing.  I'm raising money to launch a Rock Steady Boxing affiliate at the Emerald Foundation in Lancaster, Pa. The money raised will fund equipment, like punching bags and boxing gloves, as well as community outreach. We will be opening our doors to the public on March 1, 2017, and our goal is to have an open house with a functional gym by mid-February!

My connection to Parkinson's Disease began when my grandmother was diagnosed at age 41. After her diagnosis she told to go home and rest, which we now know is the worst thing you could for Parkinson's. She subsequently ended up in a wheel chair, robbed of her independence, and passed away 30 years later due to complications of the disease.

I began working in the fitness industry about 5 years ago and took on a client who had PD. Working with him and watching him improve with exercise ignited a fire inside of me. I set out to become as educated as I possible on the connection between PD and exercise. I quickly learned that, although the science is very new, it truly does work. People with PD don't have to lose their independence and allow their condition to deteriorate like my grandmother did. Instead, we can use exercise to change the brain and improve the areas that become impaired with Parkinson's.

I currently see about 40 people with PD a week. With this new facility I will be able to reach so many more! This is an underserved community and their numbers are growing rapidly. According to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, "approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson's disease each year" and "more than 10 million people worldwide are living with Parkinson's disease."

I would be extremely grateful for any donation as they will enable me have the best tools and environment to teach my classes, but it's really the PD patients who would be grateful. These classes offer my patients hope, independence, and an encouraging community, and your donations will allow so many more people to benefit from them.
