大家好!
Hi everyone! I’ve been successful in my application to one of the top universities in China, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and have been given a place to study my master’s degree. It is one of the most reputable universities in China and well known worldwide. My degree will be in biology with a focus on genetics, and my thesis will be about researching a particular gene (UBR5), that’s found to be associated with breast cancer. From my current degree in Forensic Biology, I found genetics and DNA the most intriguing, and wanted to learn more. Cancer is something that can affect all of us, our friends our family. And therefore, I think it’s an important study and it’s close to my heart. Alongside my degree, I started and run a k-pop society at my university. My love of K-pop (Korean pop) is how I met my best friends when I started university and we are still strong 4 years later. I wanted to create an environment where people could find people with similar interests and make lasting friendships. The society has been a success and there have been many positive comments.
I first went to China in July 2015 for a global immersion programme at Sichuan University, Chengdu. It was an amazing experience and when I came back all I could think was ‘I really want to move to China’. The following year I applied for a scholarship to study in Beijing for a month but I wasn’t successful. I didn’t get discouraged, and applied again the next year. I prepared more for the interview, and I got the scholarship. So, in August 2017 I studied intensive Chinese at Beijing Language and Culture university. Living in the university dorm, going to class, making my way around such a big city was a new experience. I adapted to my environment and got into the swing of things. When I came back to the UK I knew I wanted to apply for my master’s degree in China and so I did a lot of research and decided Shanghai Jiao Tong was perfect for me. When I spoke to people they were like wow you’re applying there, it’s hard to get into, have you got the best grades in your class etc. But I didn’t let anything phase me. I thought back to when I was in college and my maths teacher told me I should give up on thinking about going to university and that I’d never make it. I didn’t listen to him and followed my dreams. If I put my mind to something, and have a goal, I will do whatever I can to achieve it and work hard. I want to be a role model to others, and show them that it’s not about where you come from, it’s about what you put in. If you work hard you can achieve anything. I come from a small city, I went to a good university, but I’m going to an even better one for my postgraduate study. I want to continue going up and up. I work hard in everything I do and try to help people wherever I can whether it’s just opening the door or giving them advice. This time I’m asking for some help and I hope you can support me.
As I will be studying abroad I’m not eligible for a postgraduate loan from student finance. This fund would cover my flights there, tuition fee, accommodation and living expenses.
I appreciate the time you’ve taken to read my story. If you are someone working towards a goal, never give up and always chase your dreams. I will appreciate any donation you can make towards my study; no amount is too small.
谢谢
Thank you!
