Robert is a freshman at the University of Arkansas. On Sunday evening, December 4, Robert was headed to meet his family for dinner when an on-coming one-ton truck crossed the center line into Robert's lane and hit him head-on. He suffered severe lacerations to his face-but thankfully, his eyes were spared! Several bones in his face were broken, as well as both femurs, which suffered compound bilateral breaks. His arm has a large open wound at or near the elbow area that they will treat later-but are focused on avoiding infection at this time. They were able to close the large wound to the back of his head, but Robert lost a lot of blood. His blood levels are back up after several transfusions.

Initially once he was removed from his vehicle, he was taken to Washington Regional where they examined him and immediately took steps to transfer him to Cox in Springfield, MO.  The helicopters were grounded due to weather and fog.  They tried a plane, and it also was unable to make the flight. The last resort was a jet, which struggled to make the 8-minute flight also, fish-tailing on the runway during take-off and landing, but they arrived safely. Jackie, Robert's mother, was so thankful to be able to ride with him in the jet.

The first night they applied traction to his legs and since then have attached external fixators while waiting for him to be strong enough for surgery on his legs. He has, however, moved his toes and responded to other commands when they have lowered his sedation. He can also squeeze his hands and does so a little more each day.  As expected with trauma, he was under-resuscitated, so surgery has been post-poned until tomorrow morning for his legs.  They will do plastic surgery on the bones in his face on Thursday.  Just late this afternoon, the plastic surgeon was able to suture his face and Jackie said they did a beautiful job!

They were able to get him a feeding tube in today and he finally had a meal.  Following his surgery Thursday on his face, they hope to move his tube to his nose. He has been intubated, but more to ensure he gets the oxygen he needs and to allow his body to rest.

Both hospital staffs have been wonderfully thorough in providing care for Robert and his family.  But, as you can imagine, this journey has just begun. Robert has multiple surgeries for his legs, face, and probably his arm in the weeks and months ahead.

The gentleman that hit Robert is on the run.  He fled the hospital when they were going to do blood work and they have yet to find him.  The family is trusting it is just a matter of time before he is caught.

Please pray with us for Robert's surgical teams. For their wisdom to know how much his body can take in each surgery, and for his family to be patient and trust the medical team's plan. Pray for his full recovery, his strength and stamina in the days ahead, and for his family as they help him recover and gain his mobility and strength back.

We thank you for your love, support, and mostly your prayers.
