Rita's Hipec Cancer Treatment Fund

$6,517 of $5,000 goal

Raised by 67 people in 18 months
My mother was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer that has metastisized into her colon. While this has been an extremely rough time for her, she has maintained a "let's fight this" optimism.

While this isn't a curable disease, it is treatable. With the proper treatment and advancement of medicine through technology there are more options than ever.

My mother has been through a chemo regimen and the surgeons are preparing her for surgery in a month and are optimistic about the results. The treatment will also include a one-time experimental procedure known as Hipec, which I've learned stands for Hyperthermic Intraperineal Chemotherapy. While I understand this is an experimental treatment and still in the trial phase, based on initial test results, my mother's specialists believe she will benefit greatly from this one time treatment during surgery. Not only will Hipec help reduce the likelihood of new growths post removal of her tumors, but it will also help with her metastasized peritoneal spots. I’m hoping this gives her some additional years to continue fighting for herself like she has fought for us our entire lives.

The cost of the Hipec component of her surgery is $5,000, which unfortunately medicare and supplemental insurance won't cover, and as the amount is more than half of her yearly social security income it is far beyond her means to cover personally.

This treatment, since not being covered by insurance, is required to be paid in full prior to surgery. I'm pleading with friends and family to donate anything possible to help with the cost of this life-changing procedure. And with any luck, any donations over the $5000 will go toward her ever increasing hospital bills.

Love and light,
Heather Stickell

Hello everyone! It’s been a while and a lot has happened. So I wanted to take a moment to update everyone.

Moms surgery went well and they were able to remove all the large tumors. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to have the HiPec procedure because there was too still much cancerous growth.

Since the surgery, we changed oncologists. We decided to choose one at Mercy Hospital (Dr. Ledakis) who works very closely with her surgical oncologist. This switch was the best possible move for my mother. Since her surgery in October, they changed her chemotherapy, gave her additional medicine to help with her white blood count and helped her with various other issues that arose from receiving chemotherapy.

Now, 9 months later, all of her scans look clean of cancer. While we take stock in hope, because we are aware of how aggressive this cancer was, she is in remission.

Every single person who reached out with kind words or who donated for her treatment made this possible. And while the donations did not go to the HiPec, we are using the donations to help pay for gene therapy medicine. Hopefully this will help suppress any future growth.

Again thank you for all of your light, positive thoughts, generosity and kindness.

[UPDATE]

Hello again. So Mom's doctors at Mercy Medical Center are working hard to extinguish this infection from every possible angle.

They have rescheduled her surgery for Thursday, Nov 9. Again its a very long surgery lasting about 10-13 hours, but she is ready to move forward with everything.

They will run tests on her again next week to ensure the infection has been resolved and resume with pre-op treatments before Thursday.

Fingers crossed!

BAD NEWS: Surgery has been postponed Mom’s infection has returned. So the plan is two weeks of treatment, retest, then surgery will be rescheduled for after thanksgiving. I will keep everyone updated on the progress.

Mom is upset about the setback, but we are all glad they discovered this now instead of tomorrow in surgery.

Love and thanks.
