Thousands of us stood in awe at the Women's March as she shared with us her life as a single mother, caring for her child with autism. She used spoken word to paint a picture of her experience as a woman of color, working hard to get ahead and raise her child.
She needs our help now. Sam has been living and working in a hotel here in Grand Junction. She works hard, shares a small studio apartment with her son, and pays over $1,000 a month to live there.
Another woman living at this hotel has been verbally abusing Sam with constant racial remarks and hate towards marginalized people. Last night, after yet another series of attacks, Sam had enough. She called the police and asked them to visit to find out what her options were, should she file a protective order? Just that simple act of asking prompted this hotel into action.
The hotel management told Sam she had six hours to pack up her apartment and get out. When a friend called the office to verify what she had been told, they said she was lucky, and they legally could have given her just one hour to get out.
Sam and her son are safe tonight. With support from friends, she packed her belongings and left her home. As a single mother on a limited income, she needs some immediate help. Whatever amount you can donate, will give her the opportunity to find stable home for her and her son, away from racism and bigotry.
Sam is a responsible mother. She pays her bills, just recently got a car of her own, and always makes sure her son has the medication and support he needs to live comfortably. Your help will give her an opportunity to put a deposit and first month's rent on haven to come home to.
