Riley Adlof CVR Surgery

Being a parent is scary, but going to the Dr. and being told there is something wrong with your baby is completely heart-breaking and so scary. That's what happened to Re'Beccah and Jarrett. Our sweet Riley was diagnosed with Metopic Craniosynostosis. The bones in his skull closed too soon. They will be doing Cranial Vault Reconstruction, or CVR surgery, where they cut from temple to temple on the head, peel back the scalp, remove certain bone on the skull, make incisions on the skull itself, and reopen the soft spots. It's a very intense surgery and recovery can be hard. He'll be in the ICU, and then switched over to the pediatric unit. They are looking at a 5-7 day minimum stay at Cook Children’s, meaning Jarrett will miss work, and they will incur expenses for food, gas, medical expenses for the surgery, and also all of their normal bills at home.

Cranial Vault Reconstruction or (CVR) Surgery is done by a team which includes both a Craniofacial Plastic Surgeon and a Neurosurgeon. the head is cut in a zig-zag pattern from ear-to-ear (which allows for the scar to be more easily covered with hair in the future). The skull bone is then cut to release the fused suture. After the suture is released, the skull is then stabilized with dissolvable plates and screws.

Craniosynostosis is a congenital birth defect that causes one or more of the skull’s sutures to close prematurely. This restricts head and brain growth and surgery is required to open the fused suture. In Rileys case, The metopic suture ( the frontal suture) fused prematurely and  because of that it has given him a ridge along his forehead, a triangular shape to his forehead, and eyes that appear to be too close together.
