Rich Hagen Family.....And the Cost of Cancer

Our friend Rich Hagen has been doing battle with head & neck cancer for the past several years. First diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma in 2013, Rich has undergone extensive radiation, chemotherapy and surgery; after a hopeful period of remission his cancer returned in 2016. For the past two years Rich has participated in a clinical trial that for a time succeeded in arresting the progression of the disease, and now is undergoing immunotherapy with early results indicating that the progression is again slowed. We remain hopeful that Rich can continue to lead a productive life and take care of his family for as long as possible. The cancer he is fighting can be treated but cannot be cured.

Those of you who have been in contact with Rich are aware that the cancer has erased his ability to speak or eat, and that he relies on tubes in his throat and stomach for breathing and nutrition. Despite this handicap Rich remains upbeat and fully-engaged in handling his responsibilities as a father and friend to us.

He is unable to work, and his medical insurance and disability income do not cover the staggering medical and prescription drug costs that he has incurred. Trish recently lost her position working full time in the corporate world with handsome benefits to working in an hourly position that offers her just enough hours to keep her status as a part time employee with no benefits. She and Rich have done a tremendous job in raising their kids and minimizing the financial and psychological impact that cancer brings to a family. They are blessed to have friends, neighbors and family members that have been beyond generous with their daily support, whether it be rides to school or treatment, projects around the house, miscellaneous chores, or just plain being there physically, spiritually and emotionally.

They now however are close to exhausting their resources, and we hope that their friends and family can find it in their hearts to now lend financial support as well.  Any donation that you care to make will be used for three purposes:

To retire the outstanding medicals bills that threaten to interrupt Rich’s treatment (approaching $50,000), and to pay for future medical costs.
College-Alyssa is graduating from Allentown High School this May and is working part-time, as well as pursuing grants and loans that will allow her to go to college this fall. Rich and Trish no longer have the resources to fill in the rest of this cost.
To close the gap between their monthly income and the household expenses of a family of four.

For these purposes this GoFundMe account has been established with a goal of $100,000. Those of you who know the Hagen family will share our belief that these funds will be put to their intended use.

More than anything, Rich wants that Trish, Alyssa and Brendan lead normal lives, or at least as normal as possible under the circumstances. Cancer has many victims besides Rich
