Hi, I’m Raquel - Brazilian/Israeli/Australian. I live in Melbourne with my son Kai, whom I adopted in Brazil 16 years ago. Kai is my only child and the fifth of seven children born to his birth mum.

Kai/Caique was living with his mum and siblings when I first met him; I got to witness the harsh conditions they were living in and the traumatic circumstances leading to the mother’s painful decision to give her youngest up for adoption.

Kai and I are soon to embark on a big journey to his birth place to reunite with his family for the second time and I’m writing to ask for your support.

Some background:

Our previous visit was about 10 years ago following Kai’s wish to meet his family when he was only 6 years old. Making the decision to go was not an easy one since we had no direct contact with the family, no other adoptive families I knew who were going through a similar experience, Kai was very young and did not speak Portuguese. However, there was an emotional connection I just could not ignore. Our visit was wonderful, loving and tender; but it also evoked some strong emotions I could not anticipate. We had a couple of meetings but there was no follow up. Kai and I went back to Melbourne and for reasons I cannot share here, we did not maintain any contact for the next 9 years.

As it happens, things can take a turn when we least expect it…about 6 months ago we finally managed to get in touch via WhatsApp and have been in contact since. Because of the language barrier the communication has been mainly with/through me and at times very frustrating for Kai. After many discussions and some encouragement, Kai decided to take a leap of faith and go meet his family in person. We are all very happy he has made this decision.

Kai is 17, grappling with questions of identity, belonging, manhood, relationships and direction to follow.

I believe this  visit, allowing the time needed for relationships to develop, will help strengthen his sense of self and who he is, come to term with issues of being adopted, his relationships to his family and between us, help him make sense of his feelings and reactions in day to day situations and give him a sense of pride of whom he’s becoming.

We will be staying in a near-by town for a couple of weeks to allow plenty of opportunities to hang out and do different things together. I hope we’ll have contact long after the visit is over.

Organising such a trip is not cheap. I worked out we’ll need around AU$9,000 (around US$6,000) to cover the expenses including international and internal flights, accommodation, car hire and hospitality for the family.

Your support and encouragement is greatly appreciated. I will keep you posted...

Thank you from Raquel, Kai and the family in Brazil

Dear family and friends, yesterday (28/6) was Kai's birthday. At 1am we had the first video chat with his oldest brother and sister, then came the second one from Dina his mum who gave him birth 17 years ago and some more siblings. How wonderful to be able to do it so naturally, just love... we're blessed.
We've reached our target with some generous donations given to us directly. Thank you so much, my friends!!!
