Edmonia Lewis Grave Restoration

$900 of $900 goal

Edmonia Lewis was born in Greenbush, NY in 1844. Her mother was Chippewa and her father was African American.  She over came race and gender prejudice to become a world renowned sculptor. Her works are now in major galleries such as the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. Unfortunately for most of the 20th century, she has been forgotten....until now with the reawakening of the appreciation for her great talent and beautiful works of sculpture. It is a sad shame her grave is in the condition it is in St. Mary's Cemetery in London, England. Hopefully, that will no longer be the case with your donations.

We did it! Edmonia Lewis' grave now has a beautiful memorial. The old slab stone has been cleaned and leveled preserving it's history. Many thanks to all the donors!! Thank you to St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in London, and a big thanks to Mr. John Doe and the workers of E M Lander Co. who did a wonderful, beautiful job!

Today I received an email from a lady who lives in Bozeman, MT where Edmonia's brother Samuel Lewis lived. She has done research into the life of Samuel along with Edmonia. She visited London a few weeks ago and found Edmonia's grave. The superintendent told her of our fundraiser. Thank you all so much for reaching our goal to pay for this restoration. I received word from Mr. Doe of the E. R. Lander Co. that the work should be completed by the end of September or early October. I have re-opened the donations to maybe have flowers placed on the grave.

Congratulations on mission accomplished! I think it is great that she is better remembered in this way. I think it is worth noting that as can be seen from the pictures - the terrible state of British Cemeteries around London. When we were there in London last August we had occasion to visit one cemetery by accident and in seeking this one had a chance to see its neighboring cemetery as well as Saint Mary's. All three of them were in terrible shape when compared with American cemeteries. They are crowded and generally have the appearance of being un-cared for. They labor under the limitation of having longer periods of existence than ours and less space, but also less creativity in how they do their work. There are no vertical multi-level mausoleums or sections for cremations. Not that I think there is anything we can do about it but it is surely part of the problem in relation to Mary Edmonia Lewis' grave site. Once again, I praise your efforts here to give her better honor.

I think it's best if she be referred to as Mary Edmonia Lewis since she is listed in the St. Mary's Cemetery as Mary Lewis. Thanks for what you do.
