Raise funds for strays in Corfu

Donation protected
In basic terms I'm an animal fanatic. My Bsc was in Zoo Biology and my Masters in Animal health and welfare. My dream is a world where no animals suffer (not likely, i know).

So on a recent holiday I realised the extent of the stray dog problem in Greece and I'm compelled to help. I am aware what I'm doing is simply a drop in the ocean but I have met at least 2 strays in Liapades, Corfu and I need to either get them into the UK or in a rescue shelter here for adoption. The problem is that no rescue in Corfu has space for them so unless I pay for private care these dogs will be left on their own. Kyra is already very thin and struggled to fend for herself as she is very timid. Butch has a skin condition and ear infection so it is important to me that these dogs are off the streets as soon as possible.

Since enquiring into the welfare of these dogs I have been told in no uncertain terms their survival is unlikely past the winter months. Indeed, the average lifespan of a stray in Greece is 2 years less than half the average of UK dogs.

The worsening financial crisis of Greece has meant that many owners have had no choice but to abandon their pets as there are limited rescues around the islands. The solution to the increased amount of strays is to poison them. I have met a few dogs in rescues in Corfu who have had entire litters poisened and killed.

Dogs lucky enough to escape poisoning attempts often starve during the winter months when no tourists are around to feed them. As our hotel owner said "the Greek people will give nothing, not even a slice of bread".

This is why, although I never usually ask anything of others, I need help to get these dogs out of Corfu and into the UK. Or into a rescue here, although I am told at the minute all are full. Any donation can keep these dogs in care for another day or help towards their travel costs. If this target is reached any further donations will 100% go to animal charities in Greece (suggestions welcome).

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope that with support I can help better the lives of even more dogs than Butch and Kyra. Please feel free to get in contact for more info/updates or if you're similar minded and need advice. I can't promise I'll be any use but I hope by doing this I can learn the best contacts and help others like myself in the future.

Just to point out I'm not affiliated to any charity. I'm just fundraising with the hope of helping animal welfare charities once Butch and Kyra are safe.
