Remy's Medical Emergency

Donation protected
Most of you who know me, know that my cat Remy is a huge part of my life. Remy is the sweetest, neediest boy, and on Tuesday night I came home to find him lethargic, breathing irregularly, and unable to stand upright.

I immediately brought Remy to Ocean State Veterinary Hospital, and was told within minutes that his condition was severe and life-threatening. He was experiencing a urinary blockage, which was causing his potassium levels to rise, also causing a heart arrhythmia. While he was getting the best care possible, there was a risk that his heart could stop suddenly at any time while he was in this state. Remy is only three years old, and I told the vets to do anything and everything that they could do to save his life.

Over the last 24 hours, Remy has been stabilized but his blood levels are not back to normal. There is still a risk that he may become blocked again if the initial debris is not flushed from his bladder. For this reason, he will need to remain hospitalized and monitored for up to 4-5 days.

For those who don't know, I am an avid animal advocate and spend much of my time fostering neonatal kittens until they are able to be adopted out. Just a few weeks ago, I experienced a true heartbreak after losing one of my 5-week old kittens to a sudden pneumonia after she aspirated while eating. The animal rescue raised funds for her treatment but she ultimately was not strong enough to make it.

Remy is a fighter, and he is showing significant improvement. The cost of his treatment is $2,400 on the low end, and upwards of $3,000 if he experiences another complication during his recovery. He is also going to be placed on medication, and will need a special diet to help prevent any blockages or flare-ups in the future.

I am a single, young professional homeowner. Remy's treatment is going to drain my emergency savings that are reserved for things like hot water heater replacements, bursting pipes, roof leaks, or car repairs. I am still paying off my student loans, and car payment monthly.

Not many people can count on their loved ones the way that I can say I do. My friends and family have dropped everything to help me cope, check in on me, and remind me to take a shower and take care of myself. The truth is, that I don't feel like myself without Remy and I can't imagine a life without him. Remy is going to grow old to meet my future husband and children, and there's nothing that I wouldn't do to make sure that that happens.

I truly appreciate any help, moral or financial. Please share this post to spread Remy's story.
