Remembering Tammy Chen Fenaiche

Tammy was born in Hamilton, Ontario on August 4, 1984 and grew up in Montreal, Quebec where she attended elementary and secondary education. She was a graduate of McGill University, Queen’s University, and was a PhD candidate at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. She was a teacher and mentor in Montreal, Toronto, and Ouagadougou. She had co-founded non-for-profit education initiatives and micro-finance charities in Burkina Faso. Tammy also worked on women empowerment projects for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Tammy was a true global citizen and in her short life she travelled to more than 30 countries. She experienced life in an adventurous and passionate style, leaving behind an ever-lasting impression on those she encountered along the way.

My sister was here visiting in Canada last month. I had the privilege of accompanying her to her ultrasound to see baby Ryan happily moving around in her tummy. The plan was for her to return to Canada with her husband in October and stay with my fiancé, Emil, and I until Ryan would be born. We were so excited to have them stay with us and be a loving aunt and uncle.

On August 13th, 2017, Tammy was tragically taken from us in a terrorist attack in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, along with her husband Mehsen Fenaiche, and unborn baby Ryan Fenaiche while dining out.

Every Sunday, my sister and brother-in-law went out to eat Turkish food- she had in fact spoken to me prior to going to the restaurant that evening. She also told me that some of her students had dropped by her house to ask for personal and academic life advice.

While it is comforting to know that Tammy's last day was filled with purpose and love- it is heart breaking to know that I will no longer receive messages from her about her day, how the baby is growing, or when I will see her next.

Many have reached out to ask how or where to donate in Tammy's name. While this is extremely generous, we have not yet decided where we would like to direct these donations. Following the funeral, a cause that reflects Tammy’s heart will be chosen and supported transparently.

My family and I thank everyone for the tremendous amount of support we have received in the past week and continue to receive.

I write all of this with a heavy heart,

Tiffany Chen

Tiffany Chen
