Remembering Mike G. Davila ❤

Donation protected

In Lieu of flowers (Ft. Sam Cemetery only allows for 3 arrangements) and for those asking how they can support the family, we have set up this Memorial account.  A portion of the proceeds will go to the Special Olympics Texas in my fathers name. Please continue to keep our family in your prayers as we work our way through this difficult time. Thank you all and God Bless.

Officer Mike G. Davila, 64, attended his final party on May 15, 2019 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving wife and his two beautiful daughters flanked by his bedside, listening to his favorite music, reminiscing over the funny and memorable times like our childhood “room inspections” which were obviously influenced by his time in basic training.

My dad was born June 15, 1954 in McQueeney, Texas but was a San Antonio native and Edgewood graduate. Who knew he would discover the love of his life, Kathy Chavarria, at Lanier; his High School rival. Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Army in 1973, with assignments in Ft. Hood, Germany, Korea, California, Pennsylvania, and Maryland where he retired as a Sgt. First Class after 20 years of dedicated service. I was fortunate enough to know the man in charge of the Army tanks. No other kids our age could say their dad let them ride in an Army tank. He earned so many cool dad awards. Aside from my dad, I have never known another man who would shoot a pump shotgun from the hip, but I guess that’s why his military honors included an Expert Marksmanship award.

The military would only become just another chapter in his life as he embarked on another 20-year career as a Texas Department of Criminal Justice Dominguez Unit Correctional Officer and member of the TDCJ Honor Guard. Here he found himself surrounded by people from all walks of life. Inmates and Officers shared a mutual respect for my father. He wasn’t just the lead interpreter, but had the ability to communicate and connect with top level officers all the way down to the most criminal inmates. Throughout his life, he was tough but fair and always treated everyone with the respect they deserved. As an avid runner, it was only inevitable that he stepped up to represent TDCJ Dominguez and joined the Law Enforcement Torch Run San Antonio committee. Over the next 17 years, his passion for LETR and Special Olympics Texas took him all over Texas fundraising and participating in all things Special Olympics, from Airplane and Fire Truck Pulls, Tip a Cop events, Polar Plunge, Bowling for Badges, repelling off the Milan building, to Cops on Top of Krispy Kreme, and his infamous Torch run events. He would remain strong till he fell ill this year. But don’t count him out, he took his last breath wearing his 2019 Final Leg Torch Run shirt given to him by a special friend who ran this year. Maybe now others will have their turn carrying the torch; he loved running with that torch.

And when two careers aren’t enough, he decided he would slow down and join the University Health System as a Security Ambassador where he would come home and gloat about the 18,000 steps he took in a day. He met hundreds of people during his short time at UHS, when he wasn’t raising a flag for the Life Saving Tree Ceremony, he was strolling around patients, or helping where he could because that is just the type of man he was.

So, when he wasn’t collecting Fiesta medals or everything Dallas Cowboys, he enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, bowling, Texas hold’em, bingo, football pots, casinos, pool, darts, horseback riding, even playing golf on his phone. And somewhere between all the graduations, family celebrations, baptisms, and BBQ’s he still found the time to spend with us, lounging in the recliner and loving on his grandchildren whenever he could. He loved life, but most importantly he lived life. He served the Lord graciously. He was kind, quietly funny, honest and faithful man, dedicated to his wife and his family…all of his family. He was the type of man who kept his promises, his friendships were bonds of brotherhood to the end. His smile was infectious. If you met him, you’d remember him and if you hadn't, you'd wish you had.

He was an amazing servant, son, brother, uncle, godfather, and friend, but he was a remarkable husband, father, and Popo that will be truly and forever missed. You may have lost the battle here but now your flame burns eternally in Heaven.

Dad you have certainly carried the torch till the very end. You will be greatly missed till we meet again.
