Sailing into a GREEN Solution to the Lionfish Invasion
ReefSavers.org was founded to help in the effort to gain control of the Lionfish population in the southeast US and the Caribbean. We look to achieve this by not only going out and harvesting Lionfish but also developing a stable market in which supply can always meet the current demands. In the research we have done we have come to the conclusion that there is a current market for Lionfish that individual fishermen cannot effectively match. The nature in which Lionfish are currently harvested (SCUBA and spear) limits the number of fishermen that are able to harvest these fish that have taken over the reefs in the southeast US and the Caribbean. The current demand for these delicious fish is at a standstill, for the fact that a single fisherman or team cannot keep up with demand.
Here at ReefSavers.org, our plan is to unify the organizations working to control the Lionfish outbreak into a cohesive marketplace. Channeling all harvested Lionfish through a centralized marketplace will allow for a more stabilized fishery. With the creation of the Lionfish, Market Place organizations will have a centralized place to sell their catch and buyers will not have to worry about limited supplies. By opening the Lionfish Market buyers for the whole state of Florida will be connected with a more constant supply, in turn, this access will help to grow the industry and put revenue into the hands of the people trying to fight the outbreak.

Reefsavers.org has the opportunity to obtain a obtain a 60ft sailboat that we can turn into our primary research vessel. With this addition to our organization, we will be able to complete our research trip in 2018. During this trip, we will be teaming up with students who are also working to help control the lionfish epidemic and giving them a chance to take their studies to the waters throughout the Caribbean, South America, and the Gulf of Mexico. While or student based research team is conducting their underwater research, Reefsavers.org staff with be doing localized commercialization based research. This research will include the possibility of localized based consumption or if the local economy would be better suited to creating an exported lionfish products.
What are plans are for the vessel
In keeping with our environmental consciousness, we plan of refitting this sailboat into making it a 'GREEN" vessel. The way we plan to do this is by repowering it with an electric motor and collecting all of our energy from solar and wind. We have been in talks with other businesses and organizations about this project and will be testing out a number of new options for out energy collection including solar decking, sails, and glass.
To help reach our goals we will be offering our donors some rewards including a chance to be a part of what we do. So, we will be filming all aspects of this project from the refitting of the vessel to our actual research trip. So every donor who donates
$5.00 or more will receive email updates whenever we release a new video.
20.00 or more and we will mail you your own Reefsavers.org Lionfish ID Card
you can secure your spot aboard the vessel once completed for 3-days 2-night cruise for 4, with a single donation of 5,000.00.
For the Ultimate experience, you can secure your 7-day 6-nigh stay for up to 4 people with a donation of 10,000.00.
