Redwood School Sensory Path

Tax deductible
Help us reach our fundraising goal to bring two Sensory Paths to Redwood Elementary School!

The Redwood PTA is striving to raise enough funds to have two sensory paths installed in Redwood.  The proposed locations are the main primary hallway (K-2) and the intermediate hallway (3-5). Our target goal includes the cost for two paths plus professional installation and any donation will help make an impact.

What is a sensory path?
A sensory path is a colorful, creative and playful way for kids to release energy and tension by traveling through a series of physical movements like hopping, skipping, balancing, jumping and stretching while improving their ability to learn.  A sensory path is a great way for kids to develop motor skills like balance, hand-eye coordination, and spatial awareness, and is normally made with stickers that can be stuck to any surface.

Why a sensory path?
Just like adults, it is healthy and important for students to move throughout the day. They need to have movement breaks and ways that stimulate their brains. Research shows that children who are more active are able to focus better, have faster cognitive processing, and retain more knowledge, then children who sit all day. Keeping a child active promotes better blood flow to the brain- creating a better learner academically, socially, and physically. This promotes better health in students.

Who would benefit?
All of the Redwood students would benefit from this sensory path in their own way. Some would be able to visit for a quick redirection, while others would use it as an outlet for getting their mind and body ready to learn again. These sensory paths will also get the kids moving on the extreme cold or inclement weather days when the children cannot go outside for recess.

How does it work?
This engaging pathway can stretch up to 80 feet and allows students to take a movement break when needed. These breaks are to help students regain focus in the classroom. The pathway is designed to change the child’s body position as he/she completes the course. It has the child focus on academic visuals, while moving the body in a specific order. As students move through the path, the body movements slow down or speed up, but work towards giving the proper sensory input without overstimulating him/her.  The path was designed using research-based sensory integration therapy techniques to decrease sensory seeking behaviors and increase cognition.
