I am Latiesha Streeter. I have cancer. I am going to win.
Two months ago when I went to the hospital with chest pain after being previously diagnosed with a simple upper respiratory infection, I never could’ve imagined I would soon hear those words. “Miss Streeter, I am sorry, you have cancer.”
At first I was shocked. This had to be a mistake. I am 30 years old, I might have one drink every few months, and I’ve never smoked a cigarette or tried a drug in my life.
As my mind started racing I got scared. I thought “I can’t have cancer. Who’s going to take care of my mommy and niece? There’s so many things I still want to do. I need more time. I want to live.”
I cried in my boyfriends arms and took a few deep breathes as he tried to calm me down, telling me “everything’s gonna be ok.... we are going to fight this and win”. As I started to calm myself down and catch my breath, the realization began to set in. I am sick. I do have cancer. But I am going to fight and I am going to win.
Those of you that know me personally know that I work as a server in Times Square, without medical insurance, and I use that money to take care of myself, my mommy, and my niece (who I am the legal guardian of). My biggest concern quickly became realizing that during my chemo I will not be permitted to work. Taking care of the medical expenses and my family at the same time wasn’t going to be possible for me on my own.
During my treatment, I have been trying my best to figure this out on my own and make everything work with the help of my boyfriend who’s been taking care of me, but as I conclude my second round of chemo I’ve come to accept that it’s time to ask for help.
