Rally for Sandra

On a warm morning in late March, Sandra Prince-Nighman went for a run and saw a man walking his yellow lab.  On her way back, she passed the dog again and saw the leash suspended in the air, but no man attached.  He was there….she just couldn’t see him.  How scary is that?!?

A flurry of doctors and procedures filled the next few days: An ophthalmologist, an internist, and several neurologists.  A CAT scan, high resolution MRI, and specialized blood work.  Her case was reviewed by a team of doctors at Emory.

The following morning Sandra received a shocking message on her voicemail from her neurologist-as she was about to go for her run. He told her go to the Emory Hospital ER immediately!  Doctors had discovered the underlying cause: a brain tumor on her optic nerve.

After over a week in the hospital, the doctors diagnosed Sandra with an Optic Nerve Glioma, a type of brain tumor which is very rare in adults.  Unfortunately, the tumor is inoperable due to its location-even a brain biospy was deemed too risky.  Because of that, the doctors still don’t know if the tumor is benign or malignant, but both are extremely serious because of the location. She is now under the care of Emory's chief radiation neurologist. The course of action is radiation, most likely followed by chemotherapy.  Her prognosis is still not known.

Anyone who has the pleasure of knowing Sandra, knows that she has a great work ethic, and is fiercely loyal and disciplined.  They also know that she has always been extremely fit and very health-conscious.  Ever since childhood, Sandra has been involved in some type of fitness activity/sport, including cheering for the Georgia Southern Eagles all 4 years of college and running in the Peachtree Road Race every 4th of July for the last 22 years.  Despite her healthy lifestyle, she has been plagued with health problems throughout her adult life including - severe gastrointestinal issues, high blood pressure and glaucoma.

Sandra is employed full-time and has health insurance.  However, she fears her medical bills will still run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. She should know: severe gastrointestinal issues for the past 20 years – meaning hospitalization two to six times each year for days at a time have left her in extreme medical debt already.

Since her diagnosis, Sandra has been anxiously worrying about the financial burden her treatment will cause her and her husband.  But she needs to put all of her energy and efforts into fighting this brain tumor.  As one of Sandra’s closest friends, I want to help raise money to ease the burden of her medical expenses so she can do just that.  Any amount you can give will help her.  If you are unable to give, please keep Sandra in your prayers.  Also, please share this page.

Members of her family and friends will update this page weekly.
