RAKKI THE SERVICE DOG FOR A MILITARY VETERAN

On Saturday March 2nd Rakki, my friend's service dog who is a veteran, was hit by a car due to a door being left open in the house while she was at work and he is fighting for his life. He was taken to Newman’s emergency vet clinic after the incident, and we were told  he had a  punctured lung and air was invading his chest cavity. The air was pushing on his long to where he couldn’t expand his chest to be able to breathe. The vet told us that we needed to take him immediately to the University of Florida to seek ventilation treatment to keep him alive. We drove him a painstakingly 2 hour drive up to Ocala to the emergency clinic of University of Florida.

He was swiftly taken in and evaluated.  We were told at midnight that he needed to have the air drained from his chest cavity to be able to breathe.  The air was removed from his chest and he was doing significantly better according to the doctors and was able to come home on Monday, March 4. We took him home today and had him evaluated at Newman’s vet clinic in DeLand. Upon physical evaluation we decided we did not want to stress him out further by doing more x-rays, so we agreed to hold off until tomorrow. We took him home and within a few hours his breathing was very erratic/concerning and immediately rushed him back to Newman‘s hospital in deltona.

Further xrays revealed that he had air trapped around his lungs again and it was compromising his breathing. All three veterinarians on staff felt that it was crucial that go to Affiliated Veterinary Specialists (AVS) to get a chest tube inserted to drain the air from his chest cavity. He will be monitored for 5 days and if the puncture to his lung does not seal within that time frame he will have to go to surgery to have a portion of his lung removed. That surgery in itself is estimated $5,000-$7,000. Our current vet expenses from all three clinics is now $7,150.00

Any little bit will help save his life. Currently K9s for Warriors has generously donated $3,000 to his veterinary bills, but we are still struggling to come up with the remaining balance.
