Radiation for Lily the Service Dog

Donation protected
How do you put a price on the life of a dog that has saved her owner’s, time and time again?

Lily is a 7 year old black labrador who is a trained psychiatric service dog. For the past 6 years, she has been helping her handler navigate the world of living as an LGBTQ+ identified person with PTSD, depression, anxiety and panic disorders. Before her, life for my friend and colleague Max was dark, lonely, and often hopeless. But with her help, he graduated from university, has traveled Canada sharing his story with thousands of youth, and has recently begun a masters degree in their home of Toronto, Ontario. Lily has given him a new perspective on life, and become the best friend he couldn’t have even imagined.

The Problem:

Lily is a healthy, happy dog, except for one thing. She has developed infiltrative lipomas in her hind leg and abdomen. These masses, while benign, are invasive and damaging. Lily has already had 3 surgeries to try and remove them, leaving her with numerous scars and the vet bills to match.  It is clear that surgery is not the answer for removing these masses, but if not dealt with, they will continue to grow until they have invaded her torso and caused damaging internal bleeding, leading to an eventual early death.

The proposed treatment is a radiation protocol at the advanced veterinary college in Guelph, Ontario.  And while Lily’s family is prepared to do everything it takes to help her, they are unfortunately limited by funds.  Despite showing promising results, the estimate for this treatment is $5,000+, a staggering number, that as a student, Max is unable to meet without help. Lily’s three previous surgeries have racked up bills upwards of $10,000, and even the pet insurance has limits per condition being treated. We are asking for your help in saving the dog that has saved our friend.

Anyone who has met Lily can attest that she is an image of kindness and joy that most humans aspire to be.  It seems unfair for a dog who has done nothing but love to be suffering or be gone too soon. Max and Lily deserve as much time together as they can have, as they have many more adventures ahead.  Recently, Lily helped Max propose to his partner of 4+ years, and they are planning a wedding next Fall. They are hoping Lily will be present and healthy to celebrate with her humans. Please donate, big or small, to help keep my friend and his best friend together.

Lots of love,
Marley
