Meet Rabin

He’s an aspiring computer programmer, web developer, and all-around learner.

Rabin lives in Khandbari, a town in the remote Sankhuwasabha district of Eastern Nepal. I met him in 2016 when I traveled to his school (Surya Boarding School) for a half year project aimed at assisting with teaching, and renovating the school's computer science facilities. Rabin jumped on every opportunity to learn about computer science, and his skills quickly exceeded the school's curriculum. Since I left, he's continued his learning through online resources and has built his own website, youtube education channel, and various other projects.  His relentless effort to learn this discipline, all without the tools typical computer science learners take for granted (i.e. reliable internet or electricity), has been inspirational to witness.

Fast forward to 2018 -- To no one's surprise, Rabin has just graduated from Surya, both top of his class( and the district as a whole). In Nepal, the next step in the education system is called ‘+2 / College’, which represents the phase before attending a full-fledged university. In order to pursue his passion for the sciences, he needs to continue his schooling in the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu.

After applying and being accepted to numerous schools, Rabin received notice that he had been admitted to St. Xavier; the most prestigious college (think 'Harvard' status + computer science opportunities) in Nepal. While an unexpected, and awesome feat, it presents a challenge due to his financial situation.

The caste system is still prominent in Nepal, and Rabin was born to the Kalikote caste, which is considered  ‘untouchable’ (lowest caste and often discriminated against). So far, he has been able to attend Surya Boarding School via a scholarship through Helping Hands Health Education Inc. The financial burden associated with living in Kathmandu and attending St. Xavier, given his father's salary of a couple hundred dollars per month, makes paying the associated costs an insurmountable problem.

I'm reaching out to friends, family, computer science enthusiasts, and the like to see if we can ease the burden and give this exceptionally talented kid the opportunity to pursue his dream.

After graduating, Rabin has plans to return Surya Boarding School as a teacher, and continue the endeavor of improving the computer science education for the future generations of students. He has a unique, and deep compassion to give back to his community, and country, and it’s this dedication that motivates myself & Helping Hands to help him achieve his vision.

Cost Expectations / Breakdowns:
Tuition / Year: $2000 x 2 (years)
Room / Board: $1500 x 2 (years)
Supplies / Books / Uniforms / Etc: $1000 x 2 (years)

It's tough to precisely estimate these costs, and we expect fluctuations with these cost estimations. All funds will be managed by Helping Hands Health & Education USA, and excess funds will be put towards assisting Rabin's university education.
