Charlie's Story

Charles "Charlie" Valentin was welcomed into the world by his loving parents and doting big brother Henry on April 11th, 2019.

Unfortunately, what was supposed to be a joyful time of celebration  for the Valentin family has turned into a tremendously stressful and heart wrenching journey.

In only 6 short weeks of life, little Charlie's endured more health problems than most people will face in a lifetime. His struggles began with difficulty feeding in the hospital just hours after he was born. He struggled to breath while feeding and was unable to keep his formula down. Prior to leaving the hospital to go home Charlie was diagnosed with laryngomalacia, a softening of the larynx, which causes stridor (noisy breathing).

As Charlie continued to struggle with feeding and breathing, his mom Jamie became increasingly concerned. After multiple trips to and from Charlie's pediatricians office, Jamie decided it was time to bring Charlie to Children's Hospital in Waltham for an ENT evaluation.

After he was evaluated by ENT he was diagnosed with an infection in his throat and lung inflammation. He was given antibiotics and referred to Children's Hospital in Boston the following week for a laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy which would require general anesthesia.

Unfortunately prior to the pre-op appt the following week, Charlie's breathing worsened and he was unable to feed. On May 21st his family brought him to the Emergency Room at Boston Children's Hospital, where he was admitted for further testing and remained in the ICU since.

Charlie had the laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy completed and during those procedures a heart arrhythmia was identified, causing more concern for him and his family.

A CT-Scan determined that Charlie has a medical condition called double aortic arch. This is a rare congenital heart malformation in which his aorta has split into two branches that wrap around Charlie's esophagus and trachea, making eating and breathing challenging. The Valentin Family was informed that little Charlie would need to have open heart surgery on May 28th to repair the malformation.

The cost of Charlie's care, as one can only imagine, has been completely overwhelming. Daily expenses related to traveling back and forth to Boston, care for Charlie’s big brother Henry (while Mom remains at the hospital and Dad is at work), loss of income and insurance co-pays/deductibles are unmanageable. Unfortunately due to these circumstances Jamie has been unable to return to work as a Nurse herself.

We don’t know what the future holds for Charile’s health and how long his recovery will be but we do know that he is a fighter. He’s been fighting since the moment he was born. Please consider donating to this cause to help ease the financial burden for this family. No donation is too big or small. Thank you in advance for you kindness and generosity. Please keep little Charlie in your prayers.
