Fighting for Nancy

Nancy Bylina: The champion of all champions. Everyone’s best friend. Your go to hairstylist. The person you quote every movie and tv show with. The queen of con. The owner of the laugh heard for miles. Everyone’s favorite person to shut down Gatsby’s with, and the best person with the biggest heart in the world who literally puts everyone else’s needs above her own, needs our help. Whether you have a prayer to spear, a dollar or two to share, our girl Nancy needs a little extra love right now.

After a short stint in the hospital in May it was determined that Nancy was going to need her gallbladder removed. There was evidence to suggest she may also need a hysterectomy. Nancy was released from the hospital with a large bill and a lot to think about. She landed herself back in the hospital over labor day weekend where it was determined that she had ran out of time and needed surgery, so after wrapping her brain around what was to come, finding her peace, and going into this next chapter with a positive attitude, Nancy scheduled her surgery.

On October 5th 2020, Nancy’s first surgery took place at NCH where she was expecting to have her gallbladder removed and a hysterectomy. The surgery was expected to take 5+ hours, but Nancy’s surgery ended abruptly just a little after two hours. When she woke up Nancy was informed  that the surgery actually did not take place, and her organs were still intact because  when they opened her up they discovered she had ovarian cancer and it was too risky to proceed with the surgery.  Over the next few days, Nancy and her family met with several doctors to determine the best course of action. The amazing team working hard to heal our Nan worked tirelessly to create the best plan of action. Nancy was then scheduled to undergo her biggest battle yet.

Nancy’s team quickly scheduled a second surgery for that  Friday October 9th at U of C. Nancy underwent an 11-hour surgery where her team diligently scrapped the cancer out of our girl. They removed her gallbladder, part of her rectum, part of her colon, and her omentum. They scrapped her stomach and performed a full hysterectomy. Nancy held strong, was brave, and made it through the surgery with flying colors. All though the surgery was a success there is still multiple centimeter sized pockets of cancer that the doctors were unable to get to. The goal is to zap those with chemo after she heals from this surgery.

Nancy had maintained a positive attitude and was released from the hospital 5 days after her surgery. If you didn’t know her story you would have never known she had just endured a surgery of a lifetime. She continues to heal at home with her support system and on call nurse, Ms. Carolyn Bylina, helping guide her to recovery. Unfortunately, Nancy’s journey is far from over.

On Thursday October 22nd, Nancy received her official diagnosis and discussed the next steps in her five-year plan to recover. Nancy has been diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer and will  begin her chemo treatments in about four weeks. She will have a series of treatments spaced 3 weeks apart. After chemo, her team will reevaluate the next course of action.

Nancy is holding strong and ready to fight. She is a warrior and she will conquer this stupid cancer that has plagued her body. I have yet to meet an entity that could  hold her back or even slow her down and Cancer will not be it. While this news is frightening, she is staying positive and sharing her journey publicly. Nancy is one of my oldest and best friends like she is to many of you reading this now. We all have nicknames, memories, and inside jokes that include this beautiful woman. I have created this campaign to ease some of the stress of one of the most beautiful people I know. The bills are starting to pile up and funds from this tremendous effort will go towards Nancy’s chemo treatments and surgery expenses. Thank you for considering donating, thank you for your prayers, positive vibes, good juju, thoughts and kindness. Nancy needs every last ounce of it and we will get her through this together.
