Our school is unique: 50% of our students are multilingual AND our AP test scores surpass the national averages! We are committed to making our curriculum relevant, engaging and current so that students actually enjoy school. Our school identity depends on our promise to offer a global and inclusive perspective of history, literature, and other disciplines. To that end, the tenth grade teachers are raising money to purchase 50 copies of Trevor Noah's compelling autobiography in which he describes his life during apartheid in South Africa and his unusual perspective on growing up "colored" in a country in which racism is normative. His book is entertaining and accessible for students, but also delivers important messages about identity, community, equity, and democracy.
Each paperback copy costs $18, but our local bookseller offers a 20% discount for teachers; we are therefore asking for $14.40 for each book, totaling $720. We hope to begin teaching the book as soon as we can!
