Selena was a very special person to her family, friends, co-workers and patients. She was a loving and caring nurse at long term care facilities in Stanwood, Marysville, Mount Vernon and Kona, HI
No one plans to die at 38 years old so the unanticipated expenses of a sudden death are overwhelming. Medical bills are still coming in from the hospital, doctor appointments and medical tests as well as mortuary and autopsy expenses. Selena had not been working post surgery and Marty (a plumber by trade) has been out of work since November due to severe chronic back pain. Their finances were running low when this tragedy occurred.
So many people loved Selena and have asked the family, "Is there anything we can do to help?" Your donation of any amount is a way to help a grieving and distraught husband who not only lost a wife, he lost his best friend. Marty would never ask for financial assistance, but he would greatly appreciate it. Marty is the kind of guy who volunteers his free time to help anyone fix a car or their plumbing or help with any handyman job. Marty's broken heart can't be fixed but relieving some of his financial burden will let him know he is loved and cared for.
Selena inherited the breast cancer gene BRCA1 and was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 35. She survived with multiple surgeries and their post surgical complications. In 2016 her heart would suddenly beat rapidly for no apparent reason. The symptoms were managed with medications until the fall of 2017. Her cardiologist determined Selena had an abnormal extra electrical pathway in the heart, a kind of "short circuit." March 8, 2018 wires were threaded into the atrium to cauterize the errant electrical path. Recovery is normally a week or two. Selena, however, was not bouncing back in spite of a normal echocardiogram. Tragically it all went wrong when a combination of medical issues and the stress on her injured heart was too much.
Selena's nurturing personality was evident as a kid with her love of animals. In high school she volunteered at PAWS (Progressive Animal Welfare Society) to feed baby birds that had fallen out of nests. She'd foster tiny kittens and fell in love with them so when it was time to return them for adoption, Selena adopted them herself! PAWS recognized Selena's dedication to helping animals and hired her as a veterinarian's assistant. When she mastered placing IV's in tiny kitten's veins she decided she could certainly do IV's on people and the idea of becoming a nurse evolved. Selena volunteered at Evergreen Hospice and found she had a special place in her heart for the elderly. Working in long term care facilities was a natural for her.
Thank you so much for your donation. Selena's family is grateful for the love and support you have shown us in this difficult time.
