Quesadillas for a Cause was founded by its current President: Lee Casey. Her brother, Sgt. Glenn Paul Casey, took his own life on 4/1/17 after a long quiet struggle with PTSD and depression. While Lee was barely holding on herself, she decided to seek help for her own depression and grief through intensive outpatient therapy (IOP). While she was thinking about what her life’s purpose could possibly be, the therapist leading her outpatient group asked, “What's everyone's rose and thorn of the day was?” The girl next to her said, “Well, the best part is that I was able to make it to therapy today and the worst part is that I have no food when I go home.” Lee's heart broke for this girl. In fact, Lee recalled that quite a few of her friends that have told her they have had to go without food at some point in their lives. Their stories ranged: having extravagant hospital bills, waiting for food stamps, drug addiction, and losing their family’s main source of income. Hearing those stories made Lee think about that fact there are millions of people out there with similar stories that need our help right now. At that moment, Lee decided she had to do something to help. Lee has a degree in culinary arts and says, "It is time to do something with my life that will make my brother proud."
Quesadillas for a Cause is a nonprofit, “pay what you can”, food truck. We provide warm meals to those in need through homeless shelters, churches, and more. We also attend farmers markets and festivals to address hidden poverty and spread awareness about America’s hunger crisis. While we distribute the food, we also hand out information about our local community resources and nutritional education to help end the cycle of hunger. In the near future, we will be providing various classes and responding to disaster zones within a 300-mile radius. On our food truck, it is our goal to use as many local and organic ingredients as possible to help make our community thrive. With help from donations, we will be open year-round.
