Not For Profit Wheel Chair Accomodation.

My Journey

My name is Marie and my husband is Woody.

On November 2, 2009, I had an accident that left me a T4 paraplegic.

While we were in hospital we saw things that were lacking for example fresh healthy diet, pristine drinking water, purpose built rooms and facilities, fresh air, people that truly care, and a true understanding of what people are going through now and as time goes on.

We came home with our thoughts on how can we make our home a place where all wheelies can holiday and have a break. So we are building a wheel chair accessible apartment connected to our open plan home on our 200 acre property in Pillar Valley NSW. A true paradise. Where the sun is mostly shining with clean air and fresh drinking water. Its a place for people in wheel chairs (wheelies) to have fun. Go to the beach. Here you can bring your families and friends or just yourself. Meditation and Yoga are on offer.

The food we grow is organic and there is always plenty of it. With 30 meters of raised wheel chair height garden beds.

There is an abundance of wild life, Wallaby's and Kangaroos and with over 200 different bird species. Spectacular Australian Flora and Fauna in an untouched settings. We have beaches and rivers and National Parks just off the Clarence River only 10 minutes away.

Having gone away over the past and being told that my booked accomodation is wheel chair accessible to only find that i cant get in or move around the room is very common it makes you not want to leave your house and go on hoilday. So when people come here all they will need to turn up with is themselves. We will have a fully accessible room access to camode, spare 4 x4 chair, beach chair and wheel chair exercise exercise equipment. We want this haven to be seen as a place to holiday but also an example of things you can do to make your own home more comfortable.

The Apartment

To this point we have put every cent we have into creating this accomodation. We have already poured the foundations, built the roof, roughed in the plumbing, built the wall frames, installed wheelie access doors, purchased the big glass windows and doors for the front so it has a great view. We still need to put in a septic system, line the walls, do the electricals, put in an Air Con, fit out the bathroom, furnish it with accesible furniture and equipment, paint. We thank all of our friends who have and continue to help with the labour, positive energy and support for this mission.  We have created a roadside honesty box selling organic produce to help. However the facility is needed now and would take years of selling vegies to finish. With a growing number of people being affected by spinal cord injuries. This is where we need your help to finish building the accomaodation and fit it out.

Funding will be used for building the apartment and purchase of Spinal cord equipment for example Electric bed and presure relief mattresses, extra wheel chairs, comode, wheel chair based exercise equipment.

Any left over funds will be used to help people to travel here eg petrol or flights that would otherwise not be able to able to afford  to access a facility like this. Thats why we want to offer affordable accomodation.

We plan to open in late 2017. It is only early days and we want to grow as time goes on.

We will be so excited to keep a running dialogue and pictures of each step we achieve.
