We are in dire need of your support to enable students affected by Sickle Cell Disease to reach their full potential. Your generous donation will benefit Youth that are affected by Sickle Cell and other chronic conditions, who in spite of the challenges they face, are determined to achieve their academic goals in college. Sickle Cell Disease is a severe genetic form of anemia in which mutated hemoglobin distorts normal red blood cells into thin, crescent shapes. This results in blockage of blood flow which may cause pain in the joints and may damage the heart and kidneys. This "Sickle Cell Crisis" may last for days and necessitate hospitalization.
SICKLE CELL DISEASE FACTS:
It is estimated that:
· SCD affects 90,000 to 100,000 Americans.
· SCD occurs among about 1 out of every 500 Black or African-American births.
· SCD occurs among about 1 out of every 36,000 Hispanic-American births.
· SCT occurs among about 1 in 12 Blacks or African Americans. (facts from the CDC)
The Queens Sickle Cell Advocacy Network, Inc. is a 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit broad based community organization, servicing children and families with sickle cell disease.
Our mission and vision are a deep sense of commitment; it focuses on those with Sickle cell conditions. We provide a clear sense of direction for families and individuals, enabling them to participate actively in their communities and health care needs.
All our information and services are provided FREE of charge. We rely on private donations and support that allows QSCAN to provide the needed services to those families and individuals we serve.
