Two Years ago last week we rescued Gunnar from a no kill shelter. Brought to them as a stray I knew I had to give the sweet boy a home. The very first day he proved to be an amazing dog who obviously was loved and trained at one point. He never has wondered off our property so how was he a stray? We quickly learned from his micro chip that he was tossed back and forth from 4 homes and at one point kept in a crate too small for him causing damage to his hind legs and hips. He also has many food allergies that cause special attention too but we dont mind.
Yesterday, April 1st at 12:30 am my baby boy Gunnar got very ill. Dry heaves, excessive drooling, and moaning in pain I knew I had to rush him to the emergency vet. They immdeiatly found that he was in shock and had a condition called bloat. Bloat is a very serious condition and is often deadly. Bloat is when air fills in the dogs stomach causing it to fill like a balloon. It then ends up twisting with the spleen cause circulation to be cut off and vital organs then shut down to compensate. The vet gave us two options put our baby to sleep or to do the $4,000 surgery. The surgery entailed untwisting his stomach, removing his damaged spleen, and stiching his stomach to the side to prevent this from happening again. To us our dogs are our children and we had to spend money we don't have to keep our boy alive and with us. At first I thought we could do a payment plan until they said they needed the money up front. The surgery cost us $4,000 then the care for one night was another $1,400. How can people afford that? I am a huge animal lover who volunteers and donates what I can but now it is my baby who needs help. I am not one to ask for donations but this has been so hard on us and the burden of the expenses adds to the stress. Gunnar came home today and is now asleep on the sofa but has a long road ahead of him. I have amazing family and friends and I hope that you will open your heart and help with what you can. Words cannot express how much the support and love means to us.
