Precious 3-year-old Abbey is the granddaughter of my long time (30 years) dear friends Sue and Terry Lattavo. Little Abbey has been in and out of the hospital since before Christmas, more in than out. She was diagnosed with genetic HLH on January 4th and since then has steadily gone down hill. They have been trying to get her HLH into remission so they can perform a bone marrow transplant. Initially they tried doing this with chemotherapy but her HLH is severe and resistant to treatment. She has deteriorated to the point she may need a liver transplant and that would entail her being transferred to Cincinnati Children's Hospital. She is presently in Akron Children's Hospital about 20 minutes from where her family lives. Cincinnati is at least three and a half hours from their home. They are now trying another drug, Campath, since the chemotherapy didn't work. She could have serious complications from this drug in addition to her liver failure. The best case scenario is that Abbey will be undergoing treatment for a year including a bone marrow transplant. She will either be in the hospital or staying close to the hospital at the Ronald McDonald House. At present, they are supressing Abbey's immune system and besides her mother the only visitors she is allowed are her grandparents. She has four siblings she misses terribly. We are hoping to raise funds to buy a laptop for Abbey and for her siblings so they can Facetime or Skype. Plus, we hope to ease some of the mom's financial burdens and extra expenses of her being at the hospital 24/7 for the next year. There is also a question of insurance coverage for the possible liver transplant. Any funds we are able to raise for this precious little girl and her family will be beyond gratefully appreciated. This has been quite an ordeal and we are hoping to ease some of the mom's burdens by providing the computers and money for other expenses, especially if Abbey is transferred to Cincinnati. We will keep everone updated on Abbey's progress. You never imagine this happening to an innocent child.
