Vertical Minds  - Raising awareness of Mental Health illness

"Giving the darkness a light and the silence a voice"

One in four people in the UK alone this year will suffer from a mental health illness

Is connecting with nature our greatest healer??
Adventure therapy, as a distinct and separate form of psychotherapy, has become prominent since the 1960s. Influences from a variety of learning and psychological theories have contributed to the complex theoretical combination within adventure therapy. The underlying philosophy largely refers to experiential education to include walking in the local park or forest to extreme challenges and expeditions.
Existing research in adventure therapy reports positive outcomes in effectively improving self-concept and self-esteem, help seeking behaviour, increased mutual aid, pro-social behaviour, trust behaviour and more.

"The Limits of the mind define the boundaries of our world"

Journey to the top - EVEREST 2023
A campaign of extreme Alpine climbing expeditions created to inspire others to do what inspires them.
Among these summits the highest peaks of Africa, the Alps and Europe, finishing at the world’s highest point to become one of only 15 recorded people (to date) from Northern Ireland to stand on top of the world at the Summit of the mind blowing and exuberating “Mount Everest” .

“Belief, Faith, Passion and Purpose will be my guide!” Andrew Lavery

In Sept 2018 this exploration of endurance began not only on the peaks and hills of the local mountainous areas of Ireland but back in the classroom with in-depth study and skills training, long hours in the gym for conditioning & physical preparation and continuous periods in front of the computer screen for research and logistics….
But whilst no single summit within this extraordinary challenge is original, as a collective a mere test of fitness and endurance is not even in question as we bring into play the mental faculties of human potential and the powers of mother nature.

Andrew Lavery – Inspiring others to do what inspires them!
“I turned my back on my relationships as they broke down around me, I lost all strategy and vision with in my business and my life seemed in turmoil.”
“It was 2014, I had it all in front of me, yet my life was in what I could only describe as self-destruction and I was the destroyer. ‘Depression’ had become my outer layer and ‘Anxiety’ was feeding on it!” Andrew Lavery

A father, son and friend, a guide, coach and mentor, an adventurer, a snowboarder, and an all-round action man!

Having battled through the darkness giving voice to his silence Andrew devoted the coming years too becoming a student of Self-awareness and Human potential to more understand the power of the mind in achieving an extraordinary life with a mission to not only fulfil his own dreams but to serve others in the battle with mental health illness, creating the desire to achieve a more energised and healthy lifestyle.

Where it begins:
On the foothills of Tanzania facing the volcanic rock of Mount Kilimanjaro the highest summit in all of Africa, the physical contribution of this campaign will begin as part of a larger participating group in association with the ‘IRUF charitable trust’ and Earths Edge “Irelands call to Kilimanjaro”, reaching the Summit of 5,895m in Jan 2019”

64 adventurous men and women aged over 18 will answer the call to climb Kilimanjaro and raise vital funds for the IRFU Charitable Trust, making up four teams of 16 people from each of Ireland’s proud provinces, Ulster, Leinster, Munster and Connacht. Each team will consist of no more than 15 residents from the respective province accompanied by a former legendary player to help motivate and lead their team to victory…. Andrew will be accompanying his good friend and British lion ‘Stephen Ferris’ on this part of his journey and helping take Ulster to the top for the WIN

The bigger picture:
A challenge worthwhile doing will never be easy and we know that human beings simply aren’t built to function at the cruising altitude of a Boeing 747. Above the south col at 7,900m on Mount Everest the body literally will begin to die, hence the name it carries “the Death Zone”.

FACT: One in every 10 accents on Everest result in fatality….

Andrew Lavery
“I accept there is risk. I accept that I am doing it for the right reasons. I accept that therefore there is a chance things can go wrong. Knowing this I’m happy to do it for the reward that will come”
