Alyssa’s Ewing Sarcoma Fight
My name is Kelly, and I am a good friend of the Sherman’s. Many of you know that Chuck and Michelle’s 12 year old daughter Alyssa was recently diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma. Ewing's sarcoma is a bone cancer that affects mainly children and adolescents. It is relatively uncommon, accounting for only 1% of all childhood cancers. Ewing’s usually presents in the long bones of adolescents, Alyssa’s has presented in her left cheek, making it even rarer.
She has been accepted into MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas in Houston. They have an appointment for Alyssa this Thursday (3/24) to begin the registration process. She will then see the Ewing's Sarcoma Pediatric specialist. Once entering the program, the doctors will determine the stage of progression and if the cancer has spread to other parts of her body. The family has been told that she will have to undergo both chemo and radiation.
Alyssa and her family live in Virginia and anticipate they will need to travel frequently to TX for treatments as they are scheduled by her team of doctors. I am setting up this GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of airfare, lodging and medical expenses not covered under insurance during her treatments. We fear that airfare costs will be inflated with short notice purchases outside of their control.
Chuck and Michelle have given so much to our community. Please consider helping them during this difficult time.
Alyssa is happy. She has been eating well, food actually tastes good again. She went to soccer practice twice last week and school three days - to include an after school basketball game. She will start school full time on April 3rd. She's exhausted - but so happy to be back with her friends. She says that she feels like a Rock Star at school because as she is walking down the halls at school everybody tries to get her attention!
With gratitude to all -
It was one year ago today that we received the call with her diagnosis. An evening when the impossible became our reality and all we could do was look at each other and cry. It has been a year of learning for us. Learning more about childhood cancer than any family should ever have to know, but also learning about the great strength of our community. Our family, friends, doctors and nurses carried us through, and every time I thought I would break or I lost my voice, someone would speak for me or lift us up. Thank you all. Alyssa is feeling well, she is getting stronger every day, she is going back to school three days a week a couple of hours each day. Someday we might know why we had to go through this fight, but I'm ok not knowing also.
May this be the first scan of three that shows us she is all clear. Please...
The power of Prayer; the power of Love; the power of friends and support have seen this wonderful family through very tough times. Now Alyssa is in the light and on the way to accomplish the special things God has planned for her life. We are all so grateful :>) ❤️

Please let her know that she is in my thoughts constantly. I am so sad to hear about the fever but glad that the tumor is shrinking. Tell her Mrs. Harrison and Mrs. Gaito are thinking of her and love her!
So many are holding you all in prayer every day. Love and healing ~
