On July 28th, 2019, several lives were changed forever. On that beautiful Sunday morning, Josephine and Marty decided to have a nice Sunday ride on their motorcycle to church.
When church ended and they said their farewells to their friends, they departed on the motorcycle for a ride to get some lunch. Not even 6 minutes away from church, they were hit head on, by someone who turned left directly in front of them. They both flew in different directions, landing about 30 ft. from the point of impact. She landed in the middle of the intersection and he landed on the shoulder of the road in the gravel.
Their injuries are extensive. Marty suffered from facial injuries that have broken out several teeth, gave him several stitches in his face and left him with some scarring and numbness. He also suffered a broken hip that needed surgery and ultimately, replacement, to repair.
Jo, however, was not so lucky. Although she was wearing a helmet, she suffered from bleeding in her brain, in 2 places, a broken neck in 3 places, a broken right shoulder and right shoulder blade, a broken sternum, 6 broken ribs, a punctured lung, a broken pelvis that split down the middle and broke through the skin. When the pelvis came through the skin, it sliced open arteries. She received 6 units of blood during the emergency surgery when she arrived at the hospital. She stabilized overnight and they performed the pelvic surgery repair the next morning. They gave her 6 more units of blood during that surgery and 1 more in her room. She didn't wake up after that surgery until the next day. As you can imagine, that was the longest 24 hours. Once she woke up and they took the intubation tube out, so she could breathe on her own, they watched her in the ICU unit until the next day. She had more abdominal surgery the next day.
They will both receive extensive physical rehabilitation. This Go Fund Me account will assist with life needs, bills, costs and anything else they will incur in this recovery process.
As we are learning, in this process, it's going to be quite some time before either of them can work again, if ever.
Hug those you hold in your heart. We never know when that could change forever. Thankfully, we have another opportunity to tell our loved ones that we love them. God has shown them that they still have a purpose here on earth.
Your thoughtfulness in this stressful time of emotional and physical recovery, are greatly appreciated and will never be forgotten.
