Rescued Kitten Needs Surgery

We are two students in need of your help!  We have recently rescued a kitten named Meatball from the streets of Scranton, PA, only to find out he has been quite an expense.  Initially he had a bout of Giardia (a tummy parasite) which has been successfully treated.  He then started to breathe funny.  After an initial visit to the vet, we came away with more medication to treat a possible cold/lung infection.

Today was his follow up visit for the cold.  While the vet was examining Meatball, she said that she could not hear his heart on both sides of his chest.  X-rays were done and we found out has something seriously wrong with him.  There is a weak spot in his diaphragm (the muscles that separates your lungs from your intestines).  This weak spot broke open & his intestines moved up from his stomach into where his lungs are supposed to be!  That is why he is breathing so funny; he can't expand his lungs the whole way because his intestines are in the way!

The vet stated that this could have been due to Meatball being hit by a car or kicked by someone before we brought him into our home.  He could have also been born this way.  Either way, the surgery to fix it is around $2000.00 and involves a lot of medical attention.  Otherwise, if we do not get the surgery for Meatball, we will become educated on signs to look for if he makes a turn for the worst.  If this is the case we will need to put him down, even though he is not even 1 year old yet.

As stated before, we are two students living entirely off of student loans and do not have funds to get Meatball the surgery he needs.

Any help would be appreciated, as we are just trying to give Meatball the best possible life by providing shelter, food, water, and lots of love to our little buddy.

Sincerely,

Jessica & Liz

Hello everyone!

We would again like to thank everyone that donated and/or shared our gofundme campaign. We would like to send all of the donors a little something to show our appreciation. If you could please send an email with your address, we would really appreciate it! Thanks again!

Its already been three weeks since Meatball's surgery. Time really flies! His stitches are removed and his incision is almost completely healed. His hair is taking a little longer time to grow back, however.

Unfortunately from all of the stress with the travel and surgery, he has something called feline lower urinary tract disease. It is super common in cats, but we now have to buy him special food and try to reduce his stress. This led us to three more trips to the vet.

Again, if you have donated to our cause already, thank you so much! We still have a large credit card bill that is coming our way from the surgery, so if you could share this post, we would really appreciate. We are just trying to get around paying the surgery bill with additional student loans. Thanks again!

Hello Everyone!

Thursday was the big day and Meatball surgery was completed. He is now in recovery and doing great! Thanks for everyone's help so far. Ok, for the bad news: instead of the lower estimate that we were hoping for, the grand total for the surgery was $2,700.00. Thanks to the generous donors so far, we were able to put the deposit down, but had to pay the rest out of pocket (thank goodness for credit cards!). But as we stated previously, we are both students living entirely on student loans and really need your help to pay for the rest of the surgery. If you already donated, we asked that you only share this post again. Hopefully we will find some additional animal lovers to help with our little guy's costs. Remember that gofundme takes 8% of your donation as well. Also, if you know me personally and would like to help out, please contact me. Thanks again!!

P.S. Please enjoy the Mohawk they gave our kitty to make the incision.

Hello everyone!

Thank you to all of the donors so far. We have scheduled Meatball's surgery for May 7th. At the time of drop off we have to put down $1,500 (we are so close to that amount!), but unfortunately depending on what the surgeon finds inside, we could owe an additional $1,500 when we pick him up. Please continue to share this link with friends and fellow animal lovers! We are just trying to give Meatball a good life!
