Every year in the United States out of the approximate 4 million babies born, 400 are diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Unfortunately, my niece and nephew's baby, Slade, is one of these rare babies. Morgan and Daryn received this devastating news just days after Slade turned 5 months old. There was no family history and there were no indicators that he would be anything but healthy when he was born earlier this year.
I am sure you are probably like me and the rest of our family and may not have heard of SMA. It is a genetic disorder in which the person is born lacking a crucial protein causing progressive muscle weakness that makes sitting, swallowing, and even breathing difficult. Sadly, Slade has SMA Type 1 which is the most severe and is life threatening. There are less than 1700 people in the US living with this same diagnosis.
There is no cure for SMA. About 60% of babies with SMA Type 1 do not survive until their 2nd birthday.
Morgan and Daryn are actively seeking the most aggressive treatment available to combat this awful genetic disorder. In fact the Texas Medical Center is urgently trying to get the latest most effective treatment that was approved May 2019. We are hopeful that Slade will be a candidate and will have the opportunity to receive this cutting edge gene therapy.
In addition to balancing the emotional aspects of caring for a baby with severe SMA, there are the financial aspects which can be overwhelming to think about too. SMA babies have medical expenses 19 times higher than the average baby with annual expenses for Type 1 being $167,921 above costs covered by insurance (according to NIH and CDC).
Many have expressed interest in wanting to provide support or assistance in whatever way possible. All funds raised will be used to assist in current and future needs for Slade.
