As a nonprofit organization, our mission at Amtrykes, and Queen City Trykes specifically, is to adapt tricycles in order to create functional mobility and independence for children who are otherwise unable to accomplish themselves. Our trykes enable children, and veterans alike, to strengthen their bodies, improve their range of motion, navigate their communities, and explore their environments. Our current goal is to raise enough funds to cover the cost of a tryke for 3 children specifically in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area this year, and increase that number in 2018. Below we will introduce the 3 special children who have touched our hearts, and who we feel are more than deserving of these beneficial, therapeutic tricycles.

Kanarius, age 10 – Kanarius is a sweet 10  year old who recently suffered a traumatic brain injury in December 2016. Kanarius spent 3-4 months in Levine Children’s Hospital working on recovery, and is now relearning his gross and fine motor skills in outpatient pediatric physical therapy. Kanarius has been working biweekly with his physical therapist, stretching, strengthening, and retraining his body to learn
how to walk again. He was able to ride an Amtryke during his stay at Levine Children’s Hospital, and he loved chasing his Grandma down the halls when he was on it. We would love for him to be able to experience that joy again, by providing him with a tryke of his own.

Caroline, age 3 - Caroline is a sweet, happy little girl who was born on 7/29/14. She spent 2 months in the NICU. During this time she had three surgeries: 1. Her appendix was removed the day she was born. 2. She had open heart surgery to correct narrowing of the Aorta on 8/14/14. 3. She had a g-tube put in and a nissen fundoplication performed on 9/12/14. She was in and out of the hospital throughout the winter months with viruses and pneumonia. Her health is more stable now but she recently had to have another heart surgery. Caroline is still mainly tube fed and on oxygen continuously. She has pulmonary hypertension, a paralyzed diaphragm, small airways, a small left side to her heart (however, not a true hypo plastic left heart syndrome baby) and a hole in her heart. There is no "syndrome" name for her condition. Despite all these challenges, Caroline is a fairly happy little girl, and we believe she would greatly benefit from a new tryke to further strengthen her muscles and her heart.
