Put the pep back in Pepper’s step

My name is Phillip Fletcher, and my best friend needs some help.  When I returned home from a deployment to Afghanistan in 2011, I struggled with demons like many do.  I was admitted into the VA’s Trauma Recovery Program and with the support of a loving wife I was excited to begin a new chapter in life.

Rachel and I had both been animal lovers our whole lives.  We had a couple of cats, but Rachel thought that I could use the companionship of a dog.  So we agreed that a rescue dog was what we needed and we began our search.

Pepper was a yappy little dog at the shelter, but a kind animal lover working there suggested we spend some time with her in a room by ourselves.  Pepper immediately came up to me and rested her head in my lap.   I was smitten.

Since we brought her home, she has been a great dog.  Sure, she got into some trouble, but she’s been a companion that is always by my side.  To say Pepper is a part of the family is an understatement.  Pepper has also been joined by another doggie companion, Sneakers.
Sneakers was another rescue dog we decided to make part of the family about a year ago.

This past Friday, February 1st, Rachel took Pepper and Sneakers to the park.   When it was time to come home, Pepper did not want to jump into the car.  Rachel had to help her into the car.   When it was time for bed, Pepper seemed to not want to jump up into the bed.  I helped her up, thinking she was just tired or being lazy.
Other than seeming averse to jumping, Pepper seemed normal the rest of the weekend.
On the morning of Tuesday, February 5th, I got up to take the dogs out, and Pepper refused to come down the stairs.  I had to carry her down the stairs to let her out the bathroom.

Pepper was having trouble supporting herself with her hind legs.  Suspecting a leg injury, Rachel and I decided she needed to be seen ASAP.
After an exhausting day of vet appointments including X-rays and a CT scan, Pepper is going to need surgery....  it looks like there is a constriction in her spine.

Rachel and I are also expecting our first child, a little girl in June.  This is just a very sudden and unexpected expense that Rachel and I have to pull together.  I appreciate you taking your time to read this.
