P.S. 31 Brooklyn Kings Chess Club

Donation protected
The Brooklyn Kings Chess Club of P.S. 31 Elementary School in Brooklyn, NY needs your help to travel to this year's Nationals in Nashville, TN, May 11-14. Our chess team has competed in the United States Chess Federation's National Elementary (K-6) Championship every year since 2001.  We have finished in the top five in different sections almost every year, even winning the national championship one year. Previous members of our chess club have gone on to strengthen our district's middle school chess teams, the best in the country. In fact, New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof writes of Brooklyn Kings alumnus Carlos Tapia's inspiring middle school chess journey, highlighting the importance of supporting chess programs in inner-city schools. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/31/opinion/kristof-chess-champs-and-charity.html

Unfortunately, due to massive federal and city-wide budget cuts, the Brooklyn Kings are facing the possibility of not being able to compete in this year's national tournament. Our students and PTA are struggling to raise the funds necessary to ensure that these kids get to compete with the country's top chess players this spring.

P.S. 31's Brooklyn Kings, ranging from Kindergarten through fifth grade, have contributed to our school's rich tradition of excellence in chess. Our kids have worked very hard to win the trophies, plaques and medals proudly displayed in our school hallway. Roughly 200 students learn chess in their class curriculum every year at our school. The Brooklyn Kings also meet after school for chess club. Every Saturday the Brooklyn Kings compete in tournaments in a different New York City borough. Of all the students playing chess at our school, the best and most committed players are selected to go to nationals.

Our budget to send 15 students, 2 teachers, and 4 adult chaperones to Nationals is $15000. Expenses include airfare, hotel rooms, food, and ground transportation.

Please help the Brooklyn Kings go to Nationals and defend their dynasty!
