Wild Dolphin Education

$100 of $25,000 goal

Raised by 2 people in 20 months
The Dolphin Project (TDP) is an ALL-volunteer, non-profit, Research, Conservation and Education Organization, founded in 1989 by renowned marine scientists. We document the wild estuarine Bottlenose dolphins on the coasts of Georgia and lower South Carolina in order to track their health and abundance. If there are health issues for the dolphins, we humans could have problems too. We eat the same food and share the same water. The viable data and photographs of dorsal fins (used for identification) are submitted to databases at Duke University.

TDP volunteers collaborates with numerous environmental groups to protect the shared environment of the dolphins and human residents. In 2015 TDP co-authored a research paper with Savannah State University. We hope to generate many more in the near future.

TDP volunteers educate the public about the marine environment and the local dolphins – their biology, their behaviors and their threats.

Our organization has been severely impacted by the weather in 2016…high winds cancelling research surveys and Hurricane Matthew cancelling all of the fall fundraising festivals. Your donation to TDP would greatly enhance our ability to conduct research and education outreach in 2017.

Additionally we are looking to conduct salinity testing during our research surveys. Drought and excessive rain affects all the wildlife in our estuaries in addition to the salt marsh. We need to know how much they are impacted. Too much or too little affects the food chain for the fish and dolphins. We require $10,000 for salinity equipment. Funding for salinity testing has been on our bucket list along with a fabulous Middle School Dolphin Program…

We have written an outline for a factual, educational and entertaining book about the estuarine dolphins in the low country. This book would be for sale to the public. There is far too much misinformation out there about Bottlenose dolphins by dolphin tours and others. We would like to set the record straight. Additionally the book will be part of a Middle School Dolphin Program that will teach students about the estuarine dolphins, the coastal environment, Photo-ID research using math, geography, science and reasoning problems. This endeavor has received rave reviews from marine scientists and middle school teachers. To achieve this goal, we require $25,000 to send the program to every middle school in Georgia and South Carolina.

No member of The Dolphin Project is paid. We are ALL volunteers. All funds received go into our programs. Any amount you can donate will be great appreciated.

The Dolphin Project is an all-volunteer research, education and conservation organization on the coasts of Georgia and lower South Carolina. We have written a book with the FACTS about the wild, estuarine Bottlenose Dolphins. We would like to sell the book to the public ANd add it to our Dolphin Middle School Project which will reach all the middle school students in Georgia and South Carolina. the DMSP will include geography, marine science, math and geometry. Nothing like this has ever been done before. It's already been teacher and scientist approved. We need the money to put this program into production.
