Promote Don Reed Stem Cell Book

I am not a politician, just a Dad. But for 23 years, ever since my son Roman Reed became paralyzed in a college football game, I have been helping raise funds for scientists as they try to cure paralysis and other chronic diseases and disabilities.

A law my son inspired, the Roman Reed Spinal Cord Injury Research Act of 1999, raised $15 million in California research funding, and attracted another $87 million in add-on grants from the National Institutes for Health (NIH) and other sources.

But that was nothing compared to what happened when Bob Klein, father of a son with type 1 diabetes, led Proposition 71, the citizen's initiative.

Prop 71 led to the $3 billion (with a B!) California stem cell program.

The program has actually saved lives, like 18 children who suffered from "bubble baby" syndrome, but who now can go outside and play like any kids. Also, newly paralyzed people have recovered the use of their hands!

Unfortunately, the money is running out.

America needs California's program to continue,  and I have written a book making clear why it must go on.

I write a lot, primarily for Huffington Post (about 200 articles) and even a first book ("STEM CELL BATTLES") about the early days of the California stem cell program.

But the book I have just finished is the most important I will ever write.

"CALIFORNIA CURES: How the California Stem Cell Program is Challenging Chronic Disease: How We Are Beginning to Win-- and Why We Must Do It Again!" will be released by Scientific Publishing, Inc., in roughly 6 months.

Unfortunately, it is coming out at the worst possible time-- when there are almost no bookstores!

If I had $20,000 I would hire a top-notch professional publicist to help me increase awareness --of a program that must be continued!

I am used to having my books come out with zero  publicity, other than what I can make happen by myself.

But this is different; this time, it matters.

What do you think? Should  the California stem cell program continue?

Ask the one in two Americans who suffer from chronic disease or disability.

Ask the care-givers, those whose own health may be broken by the endless labors, and who may go bankrupt, buried under a mountain of medical debt.

We cannot look to Washington for help, unfortunately.  The latest budget proposal offered there includes a 20% cut in medical research.

But the California stem cell program is doing something wonderful.

Help me help it continue.

P.S. I am not connected to the California stem cell program, just a public patient advocate. You can find out who I am by Googling "Don Reed stem cell research", or just go to my website, www.stemcellbattles.net.
