HEY 2015: Helping Educate the Youth

Donation protected
Hello,

My name is Nicole Naa Adoley Mensa and I am a student at Cornell from Ghana, West Africa. In May 2012, I started a non profit organization called ProjectHEY ( Helping to Educate the Youth). ProjectHEY is a non profit, initially started by 10 high school students, aimed at educating underprivileged children in Ghana, using Information Communication Technology (ICT).

Currently, ICT is a compulsory subject for all children in public schools. Students must take ICT as a subject and then write a national exam for ICT in Grade 8. This is great because we know that today technology is rapidly taking over our world and it is necessary that all students have some knowledge of computers.

However the problem is that, unfortunately, students in some schools have never even seen computers before, let alone practiced using computers. In fact, many of them rely on memorizing pictures of computers and interfaces in order to pass their exams.

ProjectHEY was started with a vision to help solve this problem. Every year we organize a four-week summer program at a school where we teach the students how to use computers. At the end of the program we donate computers and books to the schools in the hope that this will raise their students performance not only in ICT but also in all other subjects.

This year we plan on organizing a summer school program at two different schools in Accra, Ghana. The La Roman Catholic High School and the Lashibi Primary School. Each school has over 400 students in total and we have a team of 28 high-school and college students who will be teaching a group of 60 children for the summer program.

Martin Luther King Jr, once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” For the members of the ProjectHEY team, this is our chance to do for others, what others have done for us; to give these children an opportunity they will otherwise never have.

The ProjectHEY team is launching this fundraiser because  despite the fact that we have enough volunteers, our team has not been able to secure funding this year for computers. It is our hope to give 20 computers to each school and then also give each student an ICT textbook. Our estimated budget shows that we need a total of $10,000 dollars to successfully complete our target.

It is my hope that you will support this cause and help us give these children a successful summer! Please give and help spread the word!

Best,

Nicole Mensa and the ProjectHEY team.
