Community Fundraiser for Hikianalia

Tax deductible
Hikianalia, the sister canoe of the world renowned Hōkūleʻa, is arriving in the San Francisco Bay Area as part of  the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s (PVS) Alahula Kai o Maleka California Voyage. The voyage is approximately 2,800-miles across the Pacific Ocean from Hawaii to California, powered by the wind and sun, and coinciding with PVS President Nainoa Thompson’s presentation at the Global Climate Action Summit.

To recognize and welcome the voyage and crew members, there will be a welcome ceremony on September 8th, 2018 (weather permitting) at Aquatic Bay Cove in the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. The event will be available to the public and we encourage those interested to attend.

The venue will showcase the arrival and welcoming of the wa’a (canoe) and the crew members, a traditional Polynesian blessing, and interaction between the crew members and public.

We are raising $5,000 in order to help provide the necessary amenities at the welcome ceremony and any extras the voyagers may need. To help show our kokua to the PVS and the members of the crew, please consider donating to help cover the costs of the ceremonies at this landmark location in the Bay Area.

Three leading community organizations, the Pacific Islanders Cultural Association (PICA), the Northern California Outriggers Canoe Association (NCOCA), and the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce of Northern California (HCCNC), are leading efforts to provide both the welcome ceremony for the Hikianalia and other educational events for the community.

About Hikanalia

Hikianalia is the Hawaiian name for the star Spica, which rises together with Hōkūleʻa (Arcturus) in Hawaiʻi. They are sister stars because they break the horizon together at the latitude of the Hawaiian islands. Launched on September 15, 2012, Hikianalia was designed specifically for the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage. The canoe started as an escort vessel to Hōkūleʻa and is now used as a floating classroom blending ancient wisdom with modern solutions. Hikianalia specializes in scientific exploration of marine resources and training for the next generation of voyagers. Values and behavior practiced on the deck of the canoe including how to conserve resources, care for our oceans and fellow crew members are shared as a model for how we can live sustainably on islands or anywhere in the world. She combines the latest ecological technology with the heritage of voyaging tradition: each of her hulls contains an electric motor powered by onboard photovoltaic panels that convert sunlight to electric propulsive energy. With a zero carbon footprint, her design supports the “Mālama Honua” (care for Island Earth) mission.
