About
My main filmmaking ambition is to become a fully fledged Writer and Director and throughout my time at Plymouth College of Art I’ve been experimenting with and honing in the skills necessary to achieve this goal. With each new script and subsequent film I’ve produced, I’ve become more in touch with the characters and worlds I’m creating, which also allows me to reflect and criticise my own work ultimately benefiting my script-writing and directing. Polperro is a deep character study, so for this project, the majority of the pre-production will be focused purely on the script, allowing me to create three-dimensional and reflective characters to carry the story and allow for a thought-provoking picture.

Polperro is a coming of age story/drama focusing on themes of love, loss and new beginnings. The film follows Emma, a 20-year-old Photography student haunted by the secrets kept from her for all of her life. She forces herself to face these demons as she uncovers a clue that sets her on a journey to explore her past, leading to her coming face to face with the Man who could be her Father, years after being disowned by her Family...

At its core, Polperro is a coming of age story; the film features a young protagonist on the verge of falling into adulthood as she comes to terms with the reality of her past and learns to appreciate what she has. The film’s biggest question is the identity of Emma’s father and heavily focuses on the theme of lost/stolen parenthood; despite not facing this issue myself I am surrounded by many close friends who are. In preparation for writing the film’s script, I sat down and spoke with several people regarding their own experiences and how they both reflect and deal with their feelings towards this. My aim is for the film to strike a chord with people who have either lost a Parent or never known them, and hopefully help them to move forward and appreciate what they do have instead of holding resentment and anger.

Risks and challenges
One of the biggest challenges with this project is the timescale; although I'm still very confident in the project this is by far the biggest film I've worked on so far, because of this it's undoubtedly going to be challenging and stressful but all the more rewarding! So far I have already spent more time on pre-production than I have on any of my other projects combined, the project is already coming together smoothly so these risks are already being addressed.
