Poet Julia Vinograd Cancer Support
$22,179 of $100,000 goal
Julia Vinograd, celebrated Bay Area poet for over 30 years and Berkeley personality, recently received a cancer diagnosis. Despite Ms. Vinograd's many contributions to the arts, writing poetry is not a lucrative business.
We are asking for your financial help. Julia's health has declined so that she is no longer able to live on her own. She needs to hire help to receive 24/7 care, travel to her appointments, and get further treatment. Some of these expenses will be covered by her Medi-Cal, but her needs will not be met without additional funding. Please give to the trustee of the Julia Vinograd Special Needs Trust to help support this incredible artist who has dedicated her life to her community! All funds will be used for Julia’s benefit and any remainder on Julia’s passing will be applied to support other community artists.
From the City of Berkeley Proclamation Honoring Julia Vinograd with the Lifetime Achievement Award as Berkeley's unofficial Poet Laureate:
"She gives us herself in her poetry. Her love affair with Berkeley has spanned 30 years and 48 books, and for that we thank her. We thank her for her valuable words. She makes us feel that we are not alone, that we are a community that bends at signs of adversity but never breaks. For this we thank her. She is the People's Poet of People's Park. ... She is a slice of artistic, free speech pie. In essence she is the spirit of Berkeley. For this we love her." - Mayor Tom Bates
This fall, Zeitgeist Press will publish a tribute book for Julia Vinograd and we want your contributions. Deborah Fruchey is editing. Please send poems, stories, memories, photos, art, remembrances, anything that will fit to JuliaVinogradAnthology@gmail.com. There is still time to submit and we want your work!
We are so grateful for your love and generous contributions to help Julia. As you know, Julia passed away on December 5. A memorial reading will be held Sunday, January 6, 2:00 (pot luck at 1:30) at Chapter 510 and the Department of Make Believe, 2301 Telegraph Ave, Oakland (not Berkeley!), CA 94612.
The funds contributed for Julia were just finally released by GoFundMe, and will pay (or reimburse) for things that made Julia and family more comfortable during her illness, for funeral expenses, the memorial, and for her books and literary memory. Julia’s papers will be donated to the Bancroft Library. We are planning a large, new Selected Works for 2019. I believe this is consistent with the original intent and with Julia’s wishes. Please let me know if you have questions. Again, Julia and her friends were very grateful for the tremendous outpouring of support and affection.
I hope to see you at the memorial on January 6.
Wow - thank you so much for your help! We are deeply appreciative to all of you for supporting Julia and for sharing this with friends and family. All of your donations go directly toward securing 24-hour care (which is costly) and expenses for her other needs.
Because Julia's changing medical needs are still being assessed, and thanks to your overwhelming support, our fundraising goal is now $100,000. Further donations will help Julia seek treatment and care in the face of her diagnosis.
Julia is a strong and accomplished woman who has always preferred to give help rather than receive it. As close friends and family of Julia, we ask that you help raise money for her care in whatever way you can.
Again, thank you all so much for the incredible love you have shown for Julia. It truly touches our hearts and fills us with hope.
- Bruce, Debbie, Jan, and Dorrit
