Help for Violet's heart

Donation protected
Violet Christians was born on March 8th, 2017 to her parents Sarah Coopsie and Mike Christians.  Prior to her being born, Violet was diagnosed with several serious congenital heart defects that would need to be investigated further when she was born.

As a precaution, Sarah and Mike were required to relocate to Vancouver the month prior to Violet’s birth to be near BC Children’s Hospital in order for a first surgery to take place.

When Violet was born it was discovered that the defects were far more significant that originally suspected.  It was found that she had a constriction in her aorta, known as an aortic coarctation, which needed immediate repair; 6 days after Violet was born she had the surgery to repair her aorta.

Along with the aorta, there was also a large hole between her left and right ventricles, a hole between her coronary sinus and her left atrium, an extra vena cava present on the left side of her heart, as well as a small left ventricle and mitral valve.  The existence of these heart defects in Violet’s heart pointed to a rare congenital heart disease called Shone’s Complex.

Violet has been in intensive care units at BC Children’s Hospital and Victoria General Hospital for a significant portion of her life to date to deal with her heart defects and the complications arising from those defects.

Violet is currently in congestive heart failure and it will progress until she is able to have open-heart surgery to repair to the rest of the defects.   The goal is to have Violet grow as big and as strong as possible so the risks during surgery will go down and she will have a more speedy recovery.

To complicate things further, Violet was also born with a cleft palate and is unable to feed without a nasogastric tube, which creates further challenges for which home nursing care will be needed.  Violet’s cleft palate will be surgically repaired only after all the heart defects are fixed.

In the coming year there will be several significant challenges faced by their family, which will involve relocating to Vancouver again on more than one occasion for extended periods of time, and specifically for Violet, complicated surgeries and long recovery times.

With the help of Gofundme, we’re hoping to raise money for Violet, Sarah, and Mike in order to ease the financial burden of caring for a sick child, being away from home for the long hospital stays, home nursing care, and for the time off work and shortened maternity leave.
