One Step At A Time for Josh and His Family

Health Issues and Hospitalization

It began because we thought he had pneumonia. He saw his primary care provider, and he was admitted to the hospital. He stayed there for three days.  His level of pain was 10, and he spent the next two days having tests done. The doctor's diagnosed it at spinal stenosis, not pneumonia, but we were told it was not the cause of his pain. He was sent home.  Once home, he was still in a tremendous amount of pain, and could only be in two positions; laying down or standing.

CT's, MRI's, and More Specialists
He was admitted a second time to the hospital and was given an epidural. He was referred to pain management and given six more spinal shots to relieve the pain.  However, the additional CT showed nodules in his lungs. He followed up with pulmonology. At this point, we still weren't told what was really going on with Josh, and the pulmonology appointment proved futile.

Bone Infection, Sepsis, Possible Meningitis and Partial Paralysis
He followed up with a neurologist and they found a spot on his spine. We were told it was osteomyelitis  or osteosarcoma. He wanted Josh to meet with an infectious disease doctor, oncologist, and a neurosurgeon. He was transferred to Memorial Hospital that day. However, the fever he had from the day before was very high, and he was extremely sick when we reached the new hospital. They continued to monitor him closely, and did a bone biopsy. The biopsy has not given us results yet, but the neurosurgeon had to do an emergency surgery.

His left leg was paralyzed because a hematoma or an abscess was putting pressure on his spine. Without surgery, he had a very high percentage of permanent paralyzation. I was also told there were no guarantees he would live through the surgery because he was septic, and most likely had meningitis.

Emergency Spinal Surgery For An Abscess

The surgery went well to remove the abscess, and they are treating him for osteomyelitis, sepsis and meningitis. He has partial paralysis and does not have the use of his left leg. This is something he will have to work through. He will be on antibiotics from eight weeks to one year depending on the healing process.  He will need lots of physical therapy, and will also most likely need dialysis because he went into renal failure during the surgery. He is still in the ICU and we have no idea when he will be coming home.

We Are Asking For Help
Josh has not been able to work for the last three months, and now we are unsure of when he will come home. Our family is in need of financial help. The amount that we have listed is to help us through the next year.
I will be juggling work, while caring for the kids and Josh's needs.  We appreciate all and any donations given to us. This has been a humbling experience for our family. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
