$11,732 of $20,000 goal

Raised by 116 people in 11 months
Dear Friends:

Due to budget constraints, our wrestling program only exists through the private donations and support of the community, parents and friends & family. Through your generous donations we haev been able to raise enough money to run this program for the past 50 plus years.

Unfortunately, in order for our scholar-athletes to compete in this upcoming 2017-2018 wrestling season, we urgently need to raise $22,000. We are very confident that we will raise this money with your continued support.

The San Clemente Wrestling team provides a fantastic positive outlet for young men and women in our community. PLEASE HELP THESE WRESTLERS!!

I wanted to thank all of you who donated to the SCHS Wrestling program this year.
I also wanted to give an up to the minute season update to all who received and email from us.
In October Coach Owens brought in a young lady who is a true Scholar Athlete from Princeton University. This was an opportunity for the kids to hear from someone who managed the tasks of being a top level athlete, getting great grades, holding down a job, and participating in family life. She did this in high school and continues to do this at the highest level in college. We feel it is important that the kids see that when they look up from their cell phones they’ll see a world out there that offers a world of opportunities if they are willing to work for them. Did I mention that this young lady is one of Coach Owens’ granddaughters?
We started off the season with wins over El Toro, La Costa Canyon, and Canyon to win our Varsity 4-way. The Canyon win was special as Coach Gayer once again got the opportunity to bask in his coaching glory over his brother who coaches at Canyon High School of Anaheim.
The following weekend we spent in a big house in Lake Arrowhead and competed in the Rim of the World Tournament. We took 19 kids up the mountain. 14 of those were 9th and 10th graders. To our pleasure we came out on top of the 16 team field.
The third weekend of the season we placed 3rd at the Edison Beach Bash out of a field of 42 teams.
The next weekend was open and El Toro set up a dual meet tournament so we chose to participate. We defeated Foothill, Heritage, Godinez, and University to win the dual meet tournament in style.
In December we had a guest technician. World Champion David “Boom Boom” Gatian was in the room showing some of his techniques and even wowed the kids with a story or two.
Between Christmas and New Year’s we went up to Upland and competed in the Black Watch Tournament. We finished up in 10th place in the field of 62 teams.
Last weekend we hosted our J.V. & Frosh/Soph Invitational. We had 17 schools participate. Our Frosh/Soph finished up in 3rd place and our Junior Varsity finished up as Champions. It’s been many years since we earned trophies in both of these tournaments on the same weekend!
Along the way we have wrestled our league matches. Though we don’t have as enjoyable stories to tell about those, our matches with Capistrano Valley and Trabuco Hills both came down to the last match of the dual to be decided. Those two teams are ranked #6 and #8 in the County at this time, so we know we are right there with some good company.
This coming weekend we will be competing in the Troy Invitational in Fullerton and the following weekend we host our Varsity Invitational. At this time we have 19 teams entered and expect a couple of last minute entries. The 27th we have a Conference Finals Tournament at Capo Valley High School after which we go on to our post season of CIF, Masters, and State. We may be participating in the CIF Dual Meet Championships this year too.
On the girls side of the program. Coach Owens picked up a full time assistant in Coach Ken Friess. Coach Friess has coached on and off for around four decades.
The girls opened up their season with a dual meet against Santa Ana and came out the victors. They have competed in six tournaments so far with medal winners in each. In the San Clemente Amazon Invitational we had four medal winners and placed 8th in the field of 27 teams. The following weekend we participated in the La Quinta invitational and placed 4th in the field of 12 teams.
The last couple weekends they competed in the Upland Black Watch invitational and the San Dimas Invitational.
Thus far the stand outs on the girls team have been junior Carolina Moreno who has placed in every competition, and senior Lili Carteno-Dzul has placed in three.
Most recently (Tuesday 1/9) the girls traveled to El Toro for a conference dual and defeated the Chargers.
The ladies will also be competing in the conference finals tournament in two weeks then the CIF Prelims. Those who qualify will compete in the CIF Finals and then the CIF State Championships.
